"I Just Shot John Lennon" is a song from The Cranberries' album To the Faithful Departed it is a narrative of the events of the night of December 8, 1980, the night that musician John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in front of The Dakota in New York City. It is one of many tributes to the late John Lennon, and also one of many other songs to recall the events of the night in a narrative form. Though, after the narrative form, there is a bit of commentary about the situation. (What a sad, and sorry and sickening sight/what a sad, and sorry, and sickening night)
This song, like many others is very dark, and very guitar heavy. In general, the album it is from is generally viewed by fans as being much more dark than others. Also, the subject matter of the lyrics makes it a very dark song as well.
The title of the song comes from the words said by Mark David Chapman that evening. After being asked, "Do you know what you've done?" Chapman calmly replied, "I just shot John Lennon"
