[edit] My concern about your username (I claim ownership of the universe)

Hello, I claim ownership of the universe, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

Controversial point of view.

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you! Funpika 01:14, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Is your username intended to be humorous? Would you consider changing it or getting a new account if people decided it could be offensive. (you are no longer blocked) ViridaeTalk 01:49, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Aren't we being a bit over-sensitive here? What on earth is wrong with this username. Its clearly meant to be tongue in cheak and we have longer usernames that don't raise any problems... I really see no reason why this user should change names. And the blocking of his account without discussion was outrageous. WjBscribe 01:53, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
In all honesty, I agree; I was a little too quick with the block button, and although there are less objectable choices of username, I don't think it's exactly counter-productive to the encyclopedia. To use an active example, I think it's on a par with Can't sleep, clown will eat me, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that name: just a bit of fun, mixed in with some originality ~ Anthony 02:02, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Dear Sir, I have read the username policy you directed me to. I agree that my name could potentially fall short of rule 2, "Misleading usernames", since it is not actually true that I am claiming ownership of the universe in real life, and the username is therefore factually incorrect. However, I believe that most people would understand this as being a joke, since it is not possible actually to claim ownership of the universe (at least without being either committed to a psychiatric ward or getting into a conflict with world superpowers). Therefore, I kindly request to be allowed to keep this user name.

Yours sincerely, I claim ownership of the universe 13:33, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
