[edit] Recording

The record was conceived by Mary, sister LaTonya and the song's producer Rodney Jerkins. It was one of Jerkins' first hit singles as a producer and featured a sample of the Lil' Kim song, "Queen Bitch", which simultaneously featured the rapper giving a rap verse near the end of the song.

[edit] Release and reaction

Reaction was more imminent on "I Can Love You" than was on the album's leading single, "Love Is All We Need", which while reaching the top twenty on the UK pop charts, wasn't giving a physical release in America. The song reached number-two on the R&B singles chart and number twenty-eight on the American pop chart.
