[edit] Song information

Written by Sandy Linzer and David Wolfert, "I Believe in You and Me" was originally recorded by The Four Tops in 1982 and their original version of the song reached the top forty of Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart peaking at number forty in early 1983. Fourteen years later, Whitney Houston's cover of the song peaked at number four on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and number nine on the United World Chart. Houston performed "I Believe in You and Me" as the musical guest on a Christmas-themed episode of Saturday Night Live in December 1996, with host Rosie O'Donnell.

On May 15th, 2007, American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle sang this song in her first Top 3 performances.

The Four Tops performed an emotional version of the song on their 50th anniversary special, which aired on PBS which featured Aretha Franklin and the wheelchair-bound Levi Stubbs who came out for the song to raucous cheers and applause from the audience and was overcome by emotion over the applause he received.
