I am Green is a Web 2.0 social networking service application [1], or “gadget”, created within the Facebook Platform,[2] which provides a framework for independent developers to create applications that allow members to interact with core Facebook features. It appeals to those concerned with the environment, especially the issue of Climate Change and care for the future of our planet by changing little things they do in their everyday life. Members list the green actions they are taking to combat the problem or pledge their green responsibility goals and share these ideas with other members.

[edit] Green Leaves

Members call these green actions “leaves” which they pile up. Their lists are displayed on their profile, available to their social network and friends to see and endorse or even copy. Some of the popular actions are using cold water instead of hot, switching to environmentally friendly products, not using paper or plastic, recycling, eating local organic produce and unplugging their appliances when not in use. It is a smart way to find out and motivate others about going green at home, school or work and contribute for a better tomorrow.

The member makes use of a profile sidebar button that links to a main interface where he/she can find, share and commit to these ‘Leaves’ and to display them on their profile page. The application homepage also features tables with the “greenest” schools, towns or companies according to the number of members that use “I am Green”, as well as a forum and a page with relevant useful literature.

As of October 2007, the application has more than 57200 members that have committed to 122,000 green lifestyle action choices, with their friends. The application is used by 2,377 members daily (5% of total FB active users) [3]

“I am Green” founder and architect, Karel Baloun, was part of the Facebook Team until 2006 and is the author of Inside Facebook. [4] It has to be noted that some Facebook celebrities, that have been active against Global Warming, have added the application. Some of them are:

  • John Edwards, United States North Carolina Senator, environmental leader and U.S. 2008 Presidential Election Democratic candidate
  • David Suzuki, Canada's influential science broadcaster and prominent environmental leader in Canada, who has earned over 352,000 pledges for the David Suzuki Foundation's ‘Nature Challenge’ and
  • David Mayer de Rothschild, the British environmentalist and the author of the official action book accompanying this summer's Live Earth concerts.

John Edwards is running a carbon neutral campaign, which demonstrates exactly the kind of “leading by example” that “I am Green” encourages.

Finally, the application features several member forum groups that discuss environmental and sustainable development issues, such as university green campus pledges and sustainable energy solutions for the home and business.
