An anomaly in the catalog of Crystal Gayle, I've Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes consists of her earliest recordings, although it was not released until 1978 by MCA Records, after four other albums, all recorded later, were already out. Produced by the legendary Owen Bradley of Patsy Cline fame, four of its ten tracks, however, had been originally released as singles between 1970 and 1973, including her earliest hit, "I've Cried (the Blue Right Out of My Eyes," which was a #23 Billboard Country Single in August of 1970. "Everybody Oughta Cry" reached #70 in January of 1972, and "I Hope You're Havin' Better Luck Than Me" topped out at #49 in May of 1972. Another single, "Show Me How" (backed with "Clock on the Wall") was released in 1973, but failed to chart. Stylistically, Gayle is still very much "Loretta Lynn's little sister," as three of the tunes are written by her then more famous elder sister, and Gayle does sound more like a younger version of Loretta than the pop-country style she would later develop with producer Allen Reynolds. The most Loretta Lynn-sounding song is probably "Sparklin' Look of Love" (written by Lynn). However, Gayle was to have a very short career with MCA, leaving for Universal Records before a single album had been released (although the aforementioned singles were). The album was released at the height of Gayle's popularity, sandwiched between two of her most successful albums, We Must Believe in Magic and When I Dream. The original title song from 1970 was re-released as a single again in promotion of this album, this time attaining a #40 position in early 1978, more than seven years after its original release. A 1993 release of the album on compact disc, titled Crystal Gayle, had the same tracks in a different order and a different album cover, as shown:
