On August 20, 2007,the song was released in iTunes America, U.K., Europe and Asia with Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior ,the movie was accompanied with the song, though Disney did not release the song separately. In late 2007, the song premiered on Radio Disney (because of the number of requests from the website).

The demo version of the song entitled "Girl Like Me" was leaked online before the release of Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, produced by Mark Jackson and Ian Scott. The demo version's lyrics have some differences. The length of the demo version is 2:50. Song stated on KISS FM, that this song is the official demo version of I'm Not That Girl (song) which was used in Song's movie Wendy Wu: Homeocming Warrior. Although it has leaked in several radio stations. The song has been re-written by Eddie Galan (producer of the first High School Musical sountrack). The song was also re-mixed and had other instruments added. I'm Not That Girl was released by Walt Disney Records while the original song was a demo though it still received air plays.

The song is about how Brenda's past releationship encounters that boys like her for who she is on TV not the girl she is in real life calling it Girl Like Me to love:
It's mainly about how the guys i have dated in the past like me for the money and life i have not for who i am without the money and fame, it never got released as a single because i decided to work on Wendy Wu and my acting career and then thing about recording a official debut album.
Song then stated after the release of Wendy Wu:
Disney heard the demo track and wanted me to re record it for them and the movie so i recorded it again with some different quite different lyrics and then Eddie Galan remixed it into a more pop disney way instead of the guitar they had a drum beat but the song is still the same beat and the lyrics are not that different. Hollywood Records offered me a recording sessions for some deals with them but i later decided to just work on my acting career rather than singing. Who knows what the future holds but right now i want to work on one main project and not rush everything and end up regreting.
The song has been rumored as being about people confusing her with her character London Tipton. Those rumors have not been confirmed but the lyrics differ from Girl Like Me by
I am not that girl, who is a materialistic gal living in a fairytale world. That's just who i play.
