[edit] Trivia
- While many people believe this song is of Irish origin, it is, in fact, not. Westendorf, a school teacher in Plainfield Indiana, wrote it for his wife (who was, however, named Jennie). It's in the form of an "answer" to a popular ballad of the time, "Barney, Take Me Home Again."
- This song was sung by Kevin Riley, and later Moody, two extras on Star Trek, in the episode "The Naked Time."
- It also featured in an episode of the BBC comedy The Royle Family, where a rather drunk Joe Carroll suddenly breaks into song.
- It is also featured in the film Pollyanna (1960).
- The tune is given an excellent choral rendition in the 1947 film Magic Town when sung as the high school song by the townsfolk.
- It also features prominently in the soundtrack of John Ford's "Rio Grande" with John Wayne and Maureen O"Hara. This version is sung by "The Sons of the Pioneers".
