"I'll Be Your Shelter" is a song performed by Taylor Dayne. Released as the third single from Dayne's second album, Can't Fight Fate, the song was a departure from her dance roots, displaying more of a mid-tempo pop/rock quality, yet maintaining the intense vocals for which she had become known.
The song was written by Diane Warren, who wrote two other songs on Can't Fight Fate (the song titled "You Can't Fight Fate" as well as the U.S. chart-topping ballad Love Will Lead You Back). As explained by Diane Warren on American Top 40 with Shadoe Stevens, she originally intended for the song to be sung by Tina Turner, but when Turner passed on it, the song was offered to Dayne instead. It features background vocals by Kathy Troccoli.
[edit] Chart performance
This was Dayne's seventh consecutive and (to date) final U.S. Top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at #4 during the summer of 1990. It also ranked at #63 on Billboard's year-end Top Pop Singles chart for that year. The song reached #1 in Canada for one week in August of 1990, and peaked at #43 in the U.K.
[edit] Music video
The music video was directed by Dominic Sena (Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 short film), now a film director of such films as Gone in 60 Seconds and Swordfish, among others. The video would be later included in Dayne's music video collection Twist of Fate.
[edit] Remix
Even though mainly a rock song, two remixes were produced of the song, giving it a more pop sound (the "Extended Remix" and the "Groove Mix"). It was very hard to find until recently when it was released on her collection of remixes Dance Diva: Remixes & Rarities.
