[edit] History

Stemming from discontent with other client offerings at the time, Dominic originally coded HydraIRC as an IRC client for personal use. It is loosely based on the design of Bersirc. Due to how quickly it matured into a usable client, Dominic soon released it to the public. Since then, interest has grown in the client due to its quirky quit messages and grass-roots promotion.

[edit] Development

HydraIRC is coded in C++ and uses the Windows Template Library. Patches are accepted and approved only by Clifton.

The client is released under a non-OSI approved "limited-use source" license. One can request access to the source through the website.

[edit] Current features

  • DCC chat and file transfers
  • Supports multiple server connections
  • Dockable floating tabbed windows
  • Autohiding windows
  • DLL plugins
  • Channel monitoring
  • Message logs
  • Event viewer
  • Themes
  • Color schemes
  • Buddy groups
  • Audible and visual notifications
  • Regular expression highlighting
  • Favorites

[edit] Future plans

Dominic released tentative plans for version 0.4 to developers in December 2004.

  • Scripting support (Using ActiveScript)
  • IPv6 Support
  • Unicode
  • Encryption/SSL support

[edit] Criticism

  • A self-promotional quit message is used by default when the user disconnects from a server, and can only be overridden manually upon quit. This is stated in the FAQ, which explains the quit messages will be non-configurable until version 1.0 has been released.[1]
e.g. (Quit: HydraIRC -> http://www.hydrairc.com <- 100,000+ downloads can't be wrong)
  • Slow development over the last two years.[2]
