The Hydra-Cannon is a powerful weapon in the Transformers: Armada cartoon series. Created by the Decepticon Thrust, it is powered by the three legendary Mini-Con weapons: the Star Saber, the Skyboom Shield, and the Requiem Blaster.
Each of these weapons is formed by a combination of three Mini-Cons, meaning that a total of nine Mini-Cons provide power for the Hydra-Cannon. This is the source of its name, which is based on the Hydra, the mythological nine-headed monster.
In episode 39 of the series, "Crisis," Megatron attempts to use the Hydra-Cannon, mounted aboard a spaceship, to destroy Earth. However, Optimus Prime positions himself between the weapon and the planet, using his Matrix to block and absorb the blast, at the apparent cost of his own life. His body is destroyed, leaving only the Matrix behind, cradled in the arms of his Mini-Con partner, Sparkplug. He is later resurrected in episode 42, "Miracle."
After learning that Thrust defected his allegiance to Unicron, Galvatron destroyed the Hydra Cannon with the Star Saber Sword as he knew it was not Transformer technology. Thus ends the threat of the Hydra Cannon. And the Earth was saved thanks to Optimus Prime.
