Thank you! :)

Thank you for your beautiful words and warm wishes on my birthday, dear Husond! I took a well-deserved one-day wikibreak and spent it with my family and my friends... and actually had a beer after months of forced abstinence! :) Of course, there's no way I'd forget about you, so I saved a great, tasty piece of chocolate cake just for you - but sorry, no beer left! Again, thank you so much for taking the time to wish me well, and have a wonderful day, my friend! Love, Phaedriel - 19:01, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I have no words to thank you properly for the beautiful gift, and even more for your extremely kind (and undeserved) praise, my friend. So I'll ask a professional for help once again, and tell you, as a token of my gratitude... Entrego-te o coração!

Energy portal review

Hi Husond. Knowing that you have an interest in an unconnected featured portal, I wondered if you might like to comment on the one I've been working on - energy portal - which is now under consideration for featured status. Compared to other candidates it has had relatively few people contributing to the debate, despite being up for discussion for 2 months. If you have time perhaps you would like to take a look? The candidate page can be found here. Gralo 18:41, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for telling me about this discussion. I reviewed the portal and found it a very good candidate for featured status. I commend you on your excellent work. Keep it up! :-) Best regards, Húsönd 01:05, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. Although I expected it to fail, I never really expected to be called immature, uncivil, and power-hungry. But, I guess that's all true. I'm afraid I'd rather not request adminship again. There are many more qualified admins and editors who will probably do a better job than I would've. Image:Blockade2.PNG

What is the purpose of Image:Blockade2.PNG? What does it mean and why do you use it with block notices? heqs ·:. 17:41, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

at a guess, maybe because it means block? and that the default image is boring and he likes bring variation to wikipedia even in block notices?. as i said just a guess.--KerotanTalk Have a nice day :) 17:44, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Quite right. The two kanji appearing in the image mean "blockade", the closest related to "block" I could find. Apparently I got tired of the same old block notice and decided to make one of my own containing the image. Regards, Húsönd 22:18, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Usuário/utilizador?

Hello Targeman. I took the liberty to correct the Portuguese greetings on your user page. Hope you don't mind. :-) Best regards, Húsönd 23:14, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Olá! Muito obrigado for your corrections! Is "boa vinda" incorrect? I would have sworn I've heard that one... And is there any difference between usuário and utilizador? It's usuário on Portuguese Wikipedia... Well, serves me right I guess, that's what you get when you rely on fond memories of Portugal instead of a dictionary! No wait, it's gotta be the fault of my former Brazilian roommate :-) --Targeman 23:23, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi again. "Boa vinda" is technically not incorrect, as it's a valid combination of words (although I can't even think of a situation where I'd say that, as it means something like "a good comeback"). For "welcome", "bem-vindo" is always used. Maybe you heard "bem-vinda", which is the female form of the latter. Or perhaps "boa vida", which is also similar but means "good life". "Usuário" is a term used mostly in Brazil, in Portugal people say "utilizador" instead. A major flaw of the Portuguese Wikipedia I must say, as it enforces usage of a word many speakers of Portuguese would rather not. Good to know you've been here before, hope you enjoyed it here. :-) Saudações, Húsönd 23:34, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
OK, I've chosen the Portuguese Portuguese version :-) I only spent a week in Portugal (Lisboa, Sintra, Coimbra) five years ago but it was one of the high points in my life. I loved every second of it. I spent a whole night chatting up a cute Brazilian girl in a hostel-I was full of Sagres beer and we talked in Portuguese. It's a shame my fluency and wit evaporated with the alcohol afterwards :-). Cheers! --Targeman 23:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Please stop

Please stop reverting my edits, Filipe. There's nothing wrong in placing a "citation needed" notice, such procedure is in fact encouraged in order to force content to conform to WP:V/WP:RS. I think it's clear what's the part I'm disputing. "Portuguese speakers will usually need some formal study of basic grammar and vocabulary, before being able to understand even the simplest sentences in those languages (and vice-versa)" is not only a self-contradictory sentence, as the "simplest sentences" part is blatantly untrue. I shall remove the content quoted above if it remains unsourced for some time. Regards, Húsönd 23:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't see how that's self-contradictory. Rather than asking for a cite, why not rewrite the sentence? I agree that it's excessively extreme. FilipeS 17:05, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the Warm Welcome!

Husond, thank you so much for your warm welcome. Its especially lovely to hear it coming from you! Its been hectic for me lately but I'm trying to sneak in some Wiki-time again. My editing still might be on the sporadic side but I'm glad I got back some extra time again. The past few months left me little extra time for anything else. Plus Fall 2007 is when I start freshman year in college. Unfortunately USC sent me a "sorry but there is no more space left" letter :(, but the bright spot was that they said I qualify quite well for transfership. I just need to score a pretty solid transcript and maybe by Spring or Sophomore year try again for USC and their cinema school.¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 05:46, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey Husond. I was just looking over the block log of the user you just blocked and it appears that they have a long history of vandalism and are also a Shared IP. Sources

Husond, your comment regarding sources at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Crefeld School troubles me. WP:V clearly states "In general, the most reliable sources are peer-reviewed journals and books published in university presses; university-level textbooks; magazines, journals, and books published by respected publishing houses; and mainstream newspapers." Almost all of those "most reliable sources" are decidedly not freely available on the Internet. I have children between the ages 12 and 22 and am appalled that they labor under the erroneous (though convenient) assumption that a thorough research job can be done without consulting sources unavailable in electronic format. If others share your belief that peer-reviewed journals and books published in university presses; university-level textbooks; magazines, journals, and books published by respected publishing houses should not be considered in AfD discussions simply because they are not available to someone without trudging down to a University library, then it is a sad, sad day for Wikipedia and for the advancement of knowledge, in general. The general policy against linking to sites which require payment to read content has a reasonable purpose, but it is not intended to imply that that the sources themselves are somehow less legitimate simply because the publishers seek to be compensated for their product. -- DS1953 talk 15:15, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I understand what you are saying, but I disagree that being a free encyclopedia means that we have to use (or even concentrate on) free sources for our information. We are providing a free resource that should summarize the most reliable possible sources, free or not. If we do our job right (including editors double checking sources cited), the average reader should never have to read our sources. Our mission is not to provide a bibliography of free resources; we are here to provide encyclopedic articles. The sources are a function of that mission; i.e., to verify that the information in the article is correct. For that reason, I think that any emphasis on using free sources rather than best sources is misplaced. (As an aside, a large number of public libraries in the U.S. provide access to subscription-only web sites, including Newsbank. By logging into my local library's web site from the Internet and using my library card number, I can read - for free - the entire archives of newspapers such as the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, and so can tens of millions of other users). -- DS1953 talk 16:21, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
You say "By not being free, they're only accessible to some and I therefore believe they should be deemed unavailable info." Microfilmed copies of major-city newspapers are available in almost every public library in the United States, either in their own collections or through interlibrary loan. Ditto for academic journals. I am sure that is also true for any of the world's great libraries such as the British Library or the Bibliotheque nationale de France. Librarians would undoubtedly be surprised to learn that just because someone cannot click a few buttons on a mouse and see the information on a computer screen that an administrator on Wikipedia deems their holdings "void". To state that articles in the New York Times are not valid sources simply because you cannot read them without going to a library defies logic. The fact that those materials are also available, for a fee, online does not somehow taint their value as sources. -- DS1953 talk 18:39, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Requesting self-block on IP

"if a block is needed, administrators should consider using a soft block with the template {{anonblock|optional comment}} as the block reason."

This IP is prone to use (apparently) by pranksters and other users lacking in netiquette. As an I.T. professional, I would like to see this IP soft blocked. I have a proper username anyway.

I am making this request to multiple admins in order to expedite the process.

- 208.47.211.5 16:30, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

In response to your reply, I must say that users on this IP have been vandalising articles in the past, and even as recently as this week. It has been necessary to temporarily block this IP before, and considering that the vandalism is still occurring (see history for Wood Oaks Junior High School as well as edit history for this IP), I believe that it is justification to place a permanent soft block on the IP. Please reconsider.
