[edit] Pronunciation

I've converted the local pronunciation of this city's name to IPA after another user suggested it. The article used to read that the pronunciation is "her'-i-kin" which I converted to [ˈhɚ.ɘ.kɪn]. In my experience, my West Virginia relatives pronounce it with two syllables: [ˈhɚː.kɪn] (yes that's a long [ɚ]/er). I did a direct transliteration of the original because I don't actually have a source besides personal knowledge (though I don't know that the original editor did either). I think I may have seen sources commenting on the pronunciation of "Hurricane", but I don't have them handy. Mike Dillon 03:28, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

The old pronunciation was correct. (I used to live there, and that's how we pronounced it.) - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 20:38, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
