Talk:Huron, Ohio
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There have been many fine athletes from Huron; I went to school with with quite a few of them myself. However, I think the High School Athletics & Co-Curricular Activities section is getting out of control and it must stop. Think about a potential reader of this article; someone who has been transferred to a plant in Northern Ohio and this person is looking for a town to move to. Huron, Ohio could be one of those towns.
The first two paragraphs are fine, and can stay the way they are. They state the facts and provide information about Huron High athletics that could be looked up with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the High School web site and the archives of local media.
The Huron High School Band paragraph is where it starts going off the rails. The places where the band has performed are noteworthy and can stay. However, what is meant by "Mount Olympus?" Is that the real Mount Olympus in Greece? I don't think so. Is it something that only a band member would know about? If it is, take it out. This is not a place for inside jokes, take that to MySpace or YouTube.
It was said the band has received the "..."Ballin'" rating at the 2006 Huron Riverfest Parade." I have never heard of such an award. What is the significance of that award to someone who has happened upon the Huron, Ohio entry? A band can be voted the "best band" or whatever at the Huron Riverfest parade and it might be significant to someone in the band, or someone familiar with the band, but only to them. Win the best band award at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade or the Rose Bowl Parade, that would be worth noting. Winning some kind of obscure award at the local community festival does not measure up.
The band director is a "noted kayak enthusiast" and before he was a "noted Akron alum." Noted by whom? Why? What does his being "kayak enthusiast" have to do with being the band director?
I feel the last paragraph is totally subjective and does not belong in this article. I am sure Steve West was and is a great athlete; but even if he is favored to win the Heisman Trophy next year; that paragraph does not belong in here. Move it to the Heidelberg College article instead.
I love my home town; I am happy you do as well. I am not trying to belittle any individual or group's accomplishments. Please note the Wikipedia guidelines. If you put something in; please make sure it is relevant and independently verifiable. Zars 17:14, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
I too am from Huron, I graduated from Huron High School about two years ago, and I have to say the stuff about the band was pretty funny, and if you gave me five or six gueses I bet I could pinpoint who wrote that stuff.
I can't say I disagree with uhh..."Zars", beings that Wikipedia has incredibly strict doctrines I would say that such postings are inaapropriate, and I wish I could honestly say I disagreed with the "strictness", if you will, but I guess that's what makes Wikipedia a decent place for facts and not just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo (there is a wikipedia-esque site where "mumbo-jumbo is encouraged, I don't remember what it's called though).
Anyway, I'll close by saying that I really don't give two baby bunny shits about whether or not the Huron band is mentioned/ficticiously documented in this article, nor do I give an aardvark's left testicle whether or not the band even exists, as a matter of fact, I think it would be more appropriate to talk about the weird jackass that the 2001 football team caught humping the "H" on the field, during practice. Let me also point out that when he was asked to leave, he didn't quickly jump up and run away as one would suspect, he actually said "Okay, I'm almost finished". Almost? Talk about a bastard child feeding on the spoiled breast milk of Satan's left tit.
So yeah, lets keep the band crap out of this otherwise pristine article, back in the day our band would have been worthy to be mentioned on this site, but now? Those new uniforms really lowered not only their aesthetic quality, but also their ability to play notes that weren't so flat they'd make a blue whale shit the diaper. Deuces.
