Image:Hurricane Ivan I-10 Damage.jpg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Interstate 10 bridge over Escambia Bay near Pensacola, Florida, 36 hours after Hurricane Ivan inflicted significant damage. The photograph is taken from the North, looking Southeast toward Gulf Breeze and Santa Rosa Island/Pensacola Beach (not pictured). The Eastbound span (background) sustained major damage, with dozens of sections washed away and several pilings destroyed or shifted. The Westbound span (foreground) received relatively less damage.

The remains of a tractor-trailer, whose driver attempted to cross the 2.6 mi (4.2 km) bridge during the strong category-three hurricane, can be seen at the right side of the photo. Officials have speculated that a 30-40 ft (9-12 m) wave had to have been responsible for tossing the massive concrete sections into the bay.
