Hur (meaning Angel) is a name of Arab people and several persons in the Bible. Hur is also a family name of people in Pakistan.

Hur was the name of one of the high-ranking commanders of the army of Omar-ibn-e-Saad who faced the grandson of the Prophet of Islam Imam Hussain ibn-e-Abi Talib (a.s.), with orders from Yazeed-ibn-Muawiah to either get Hussain's (a.s.) allegiance for his corrupt Khalifat, or kill Hussain (a.s.) and all his friends. It was Hur and his army who first faced Imam Hussain (a.s.), and then kept them under siege, preventing them from getting water.

On the day of Ashura, Hur made a huge decision. Right before the battle started, he left his position and the army he was commanding, and joined Imam Hussain (a.s.), and was the first to be killed in the way of Allah (swt), by the army he used to be a commander of just a few hours earlier. The name "Hur" that should have been hurry means free, freeborn, noble, freeman.

[edit] Hur, Aide to Moses

The most prominent of these persons is mentioned in the Book of Exodus of the Bible. He was a member of the Tribe of Judah. He was evidently an important individual, as he was chosen to go with Moses and Aaron to the top of a mountain during the war against Amalek. He, with Aaron, was left to answer any questions from the Israelite elders while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the tablets (Exodus 17:10-12;24:14).

According to Midrash tradition, he was the husband of Miriam, which would explain his close working relationship with Moses and Aaron, and was lynched when he refused to participate in the creation of the Golden Calf. He is mentioned in the Historia Scholastica of Petrus Comestor as being "suffocated with spittle." [1]

[edit] Hur, an Arab name

Hur, a family name in countries in the Middle East and Pakistan.

[edit] Hur, Grandfather of the Messeneger

A member of the Tribe of Judah, he was the father of Uri, the father of Bezaleel (Ex. 31:2; 35:30; 38:22; 1 Chron. 2:19-20; 2 Chron. 1:5). This may be the same person as Moses's aide, but currently is uncertain.

[edit] Hur, a King of the Midianites

He was killed with four other Midianite kings during the time of Moses by an Israelite expedition led by Phinehas, son of Eleazar. Baalam, son of Beor, was also slain by the Israelites in this expedition (Num. 31:8; Joshua 13:21).

[edit] Hur, Father of an Officer of Solomon

He is only mentioned in this verse, and the name of his son is not mentioned (1 Kings 4:8); there is no other biographical data regarding him. While it is possible it could refer to one of the other persons by the name of Hur (other than the King of Midian) was an ancestor and not a biological father, it is extremely unlikely.

[edit] Hur, the Father of Rephaiah

He is only mentioned in his relationship to Rephaiah (Nehemiah 3:9); there is no other biographical data regarding him. While it is possible it could refer to one of the other persons by the name of Hur (other than the King of Midian) if "Rephaiah the son of Hur" means Hur was an ancestor and not a biological father, it is extremely unlikely.

[edit] Hur, Korean name

Hur is a relatively rare Korean surname, and means 'to advocate'. Famous Koreans with the last name Hur (허) include Huh-Gyun, 허균(Author of famous korean story, Hong Gil Dong), 허준 (Famous court doctor who chose to serve the poor), and others. Alternative romanicized Korean surnames are Heo and Huh.

Keunbo Hur

Hur is also the last name of a well-known Korean ham radio specialist, Keunbo Hur. A common mispronunciation of his name is to pronounce the "Keun", whereas it should remain silent. Keunbo makes his living by illegally trafficking ham radios stuffed with cocaine in order to make enough money to operate a massive bank heist.[citation needed]

[edit] Other Mentions of "Hur"

Some of the passages in 1 Chronicles are difficult to interpret. Such mentions are 1 Chronicles 2:50; 4:1,4. There is a good possibility that these mentions may refer to one of the aforementioned persons (especially Moses' aide or Bezaleel's grandfather), but this is currently uncertain.

Hur is also an army of Pir Pagaro in Pakistan, that was built by Hazrat Soriah Badshah (Father of Pir Saien Pagaro). The HUR community has played a brilliant role in the freedom of Pakistan. The Leader of the party, Pir Hazrat Soriah Badshsah, was Martyred in the nineties. He was the bravest leader in the movement of Pakistan. (Plz add further details to increase this information specially hur community will be wished with open arms.)
