[edit] Slovenian nationalism
Slovenian nationalism has its roots in the 1848 Spring of Nations. The Slovene Lands were part of the Austrian Empire, but divided between several provinces. Slovene nationalists headed by linguist Fran Miklošič campaigned for a United Slovenia under Habsburg rule and for the equality of the Slovene language. These aspirations were suppressed in the wake of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, although some educational and cultural concessions were made.
When Austria-Hungary broke apartin 1918 after World War I, most of the Slovene Lands were unified as part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which joined with the Kingdom of Serbia to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Slovenian nationalism suffered a setback in 1920 when the new state's northern border was decided by the Carinthian Plebiscite: Although up to 70% of the disputed territory's population were ethnic Slovenes, a majority of 59.1% preferred to remain with Austria.
