[edit] Early career
He began writing songs and playing shows locally in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA areas of Virginia at the age of 17, and recorded an E.P. simply entitled 2003 EP. Using money from the sales of that record, he produced and independently released a full-length entitled It Will Break Your Heart How Clever This Gets. Soon after, Smith sent a demo to manager Brian Schechter (My Chemical Romance, Circa Survive, Drive By,) and Schechter's interest was piqued.[1] Schechter had Smith record some demos in his Brooklyn apartment, and shortly after, Hunter graduated high school and moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University.[2]
[edit] College years
While attending Northeastern, Smith built a fanbase of primarily college students, playing several sold-out shows at small college venues. During these college years, Smith went back and forth from Boston and Belleville, New Jersey, to record demos in Citadel Studios with Todd Price (Drive By) and Josh Jakubowski (Neil Perry, Hot Cross.) These demos were never released as they were slated for release on a record from Riot Squad Records.
[edit] Present
In the late summer of 2007, Smith was told to recruit a band to recreate live the full-band arrangements he was doing in the studio. Over the course of a month, Smith enlisted Brandon Bangley (One More Go, Illegal Hands to the Face) for drums, Graham Partridge (Deep Sea Creatures) for lead guitar and synthesizer, Carlos Matos for rhythm guitar, and Will Angelos (Autonym) for bass.[3] Smith is no longer affiliated with Riot Squad Records or management and is currently unsigned. Smith and his band intend to record and tour by the end of 2008.
