Hungry Girl is a free daily email subscription service about guilt-free eating that launched in May of 2004 with just 200 subscribers. There are currently over 400,000 people who receive HG's daily emails filled with tips for healthy eating. [1] Hungry Girl's target demo, middle to upper-middle class women 18-54, make up about 20% of the US population. [2]
Hungry Girl is run by Lisa Lillien whose tagline is "I'm not a nutritionist, I'm just hungry." [3]Aside from being food-obsessed, Lisa is also a media executive, having held positions at Nickelodeon and Warner Bros. [4] Due to the overwhelming response to hungry-girl.com, Lisa decided to leave the corporate world, and now she and her staff of six run Hungry Girl full time.
In addition to daily emails, Hungry Girl content is seen regularly on Yahoo[5], WeightWatchers.com[6], Seventeen Magazine, People Style Watch, the NY Daily News, and on the TV show Extra. The first Hungry Girl book, entitled Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World will be released on 4/29/08 from St. Martin's Press.
[edit] Hungry Girl's First Book
Lisa Lillien (a.k.a. Hungry Girl) released her first book on April 29, 2008 under the title "Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World." The popular book was published and distributed by St. Martins Press. The first printing was originally 250,000 copies, but due to demand, the first printing was soon increased to 350,000 copies. There are currently 400,000 copies in print.
The book debuted at #2 on the New York Times bestseller list (an unusual achievement for a first time author). The book was featured in a April 2008 issue of People magazine. Lisa Lillien appeared on The Today Show on May 4th, 2008 to promote the book when she was in New York during a 10 city book-signing tour. The book also debuted on USA Today's Best Sellers Database at #6 and on Publisher's Weekly's Best Sellers list at #2.
