Hung Hom Station (紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (九龍站) is a station on the East Rail Line in Hong Kong. It is located in Hung Hom, Kowloon.
This station was opened in 1974 because the old Kowloon station at Tsim Sha Tsui was too small, had no room for expansion and was therefore demolished in the same year (although the clock tower still stands). This new Kowloon station, later renamed Hung Hom station, served as the terminus for East Rail until 24 October 2004, when KCR East Rail was extended to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station at East Tsim Sha Tsui. The expanded part of the concourse in Hung Hom station was opened in 2001, making it the largest KCR station, before the opening of East Tsim Sha Tsui station.
It now serves as an intermediate station on East Rail Line, as well as the terminus of intercity services with destinations to major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, as well as Zhaoqing, Foshan, Dongguan in Guangdong.
Hung Hom Station is one of the three Hong Kong ports-of-entry on East Rail Line, along with Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma Chau Station.
Before the relocation of Kowloon terminus from Tsim Sha Tsui to Hung Hom in 1974, a station named Hung Hom was located at Chatham Road South, next to the then coastline of Hung Hom Bay and near Gun Club Hill Barracks.
Hung Hom and its surrounding roads and areas still carry signage referring to the Hung Hom transport interchange as "Railway Terminus". Although East Tsim Sha Tsui is the current terminus, this will revert back to Hung Hom when the Kowloon Southern Link opens in 2009, where the East Rail Line will meet the West Rail Line at Hung Hom (and East Tsim Sha Tsui will become a West Rail Line intermediate station).
Since Hung Hom Station is located near the Cross Harbour Tunnel, it serves as an important transport interchange for passengers heading to and from Hong Kong Island.

[edit] Future development
The Sha Tin to Central Link, in its various manifestations throughout the last thirty years, all considered Hung Hom as a strategic key. In the latest recommendations by the Legco, the East Rail Line will be extended to Hong Kong Island, forming a North-South corridor, whereas the West Rail Line, the Ma On Shan Line, and the yet-to-be-built East Kowloon Link, will be connected into an East-West Line. Hung Hom will serve as a cross-platform interchange station. The proposal negated the need to perform three-line interchanges, which would have required new underground platforms and escalator transfers.
