Hundal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hundal is a clan or gotra of Jats, found in Punjab (India),Haryana, Punjab (Pakistan). They are also found among the South Asian immigrant communities in the UK,US, Canada, Hong Kong and in other parts of the world. Hundal is also sometimes spelt as Hoondal or Hundle. They are less in number than other jatt clans but they are considered one of the most prominent jatt clans because of there fierce nature.

Like many other Jat gotras, Hundals claim to belong historically to Suryavanshi lineage of Rajputs. It is commonly understood that the boundaries between Rajput and Jat clans are rather arbitrary and have changed over time. Most scholars thus subscribe to the view that Rajputs, Jats, Khatris and other groups of clans belong to the Kshatriya varna. Like others in the varna, Hundals are of deemed to be of Scythian stock.

It is also said that Hundal means group(dal) of White_Huns. Hundals are claimed to be there decendents

In Punjab (India) hundals are believed to originate from village Bundala in Amritsar district. There are around ten vilaage surrounding Bundala spread out from Bundala over the time. Hundals are also located at Verka (Amritsar), Garhshanker (Hoshiarpur) and parts of Patiala and Jallandar Districts, believed to be originated from Bundala village over the time. .

In Pakistan, most of the families belonging to this gotra of Jats originate from a village called Behlolpur, near Qila Sobha Singh, District Narowal (Previously District Sialkot) and after the settlement in and around District Faislabad, in a village of same name, Behlolpur, situated near Sangla Hill. Chaudhry Atta-ullah Hundal, Chaudhry Zaheer Ahmed Hundal, Dr. Abdul Hameed Hundal and their families originate from Behlolpur village near Faisalabad, Pakistan. Over generations, most families have emigrated to and settled in the bigger cities of Lahore and Faisalabad. Some have moved to Khairpur sind.Ch Muhammad Hussain was the 1st person who shifted to Sind in 1932. All Hundals in Sind are Shia muslims n Pakistan are mostly sunni Muslims. Legend has it that they embraced Islam through a sufi saint based in district Sialkot. Most hundals in India are sikh.
