[edit] Earlier talk material (mixed)

Thank you for inserting the reference. I did not know that Project Gutenberg had made it available.

You asked "Why miss out of this book?", in your edit on Almroth Wright and since you asked, I thought I might answer.

The reason I had not thought of including that book earlier, is that I was only interested in the medical history. I began taking an interest when a lot of physicians "re-discovered" his works and warnings so long ago.

His view on Woman Suffrage is amusing today. The book is quite well written, and very logical, which is totally in his style, as was his inability to comprehend why anyone would be offended by his views. His view were logical, after all.

Just goes to show how limited logic can be sometimes, doesnt it?

Again, thank you for including it. DanielDemaret 10:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome

Since not many people pass by on Wikipedia who would have heard of the likes of Oliver Strachey and Michael Crum, I thought I should say "hi" and welcome you to the project properly...so, um, Wikipedia:Welcome to Wikipedia! You seem to know what you're doing, but feel free to drop me a note if you need any help with anything. — Matt Crypto 15:16, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Well categories is a challenge (not on Crypto subjects though), and so is referencing. hence I just say (Irons page 99) with Iron's book listed in the Reference section. Hugo999 10:18, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oliver Strachey and Michael Crum

I am sadly or possibly blissfultt ignorant of both Oliver Strachey and Michael Crum. Do you think I should know of them? Thank you for your welcome. DanielDemaret 16:00, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Daniel. While I was actually addressing Hugo999 (this being his talk page and all), you are of course very welcome as well, although you seem to have been around Wikipedia long enough that it's a bit belated by now ;-) As for Strachey and Crum, they were British codebreakers. We should probably have an article on them; there's certainly enough material for Strachey. — Matt Crypto 16:06, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Strachey certainly, Crum maybe. Perhaps another B-P page for minor characters at B-P who may not warrant their own page? (I created one for Bob Roseveare who is a distant relative as well as being at B-P, but it has been tagged). Hugo999 10:24, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

See Oliver Strachey, perhaps Hugh Foss as another old (prewar) hand.

== List of Australian and New Zealand advertising characters ==

Hi - sorry about this, but I've just reverted your additions to the list of Aus & NZ advertising characters. Advertising characters are fictional characters created specifically for the advertismenets (like Cookie Bear and Madge), not celebrity endorsements or real people using their real names. It would be good if you wrote a little about yourself (not too much) on your user page. It is not a home page, but it belongs to the wiki as general information. Perhaps, take an interest in the layout of others' users pages before starting your own. Snowman 14:35, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding edits to Swallows and Amazons (series)

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Hugo999! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, but note that the link you added, matching rule \bfreewebs\.com\/.+, is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia's external links policy for more information. If the link was to an image, please read Wikipedia's image tutorial on how to use a more appropriate method to insert the image into an article. If your link was intended to promote a site you own, are affiliated with, or will make money from inclusion in Wikipedia, please note that inserting spam into Wikipedia is against policy. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! Shadowbot 10:38, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Am not sure which of several links was objected to but none I am involved with and as far as I am aware they are not commercial sites or spam. One on book editions does have cover images for books in various languages but with descriptions of them. Hugo999 13:24, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Public transport in New Zealand

Hi. You recently added material to this article. Could you please do Wikipedia the favour of getting a reference for that? All additions of actual content (as opposed to tweakings or rephrasings) should be referenced. Cheers. Ingolfson 08:09, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

The references willo be on the main article ie Trams in New Zealand, when I split Trams in Australasia. Should refs from articles be duplicated in overview articles, when the article on Trams in NZ will include them?

Well, my personal experience is that anything not very general and immediately followed by a link to the relevant Wikipedia article is fair game for some deletionists, but maybe I am simply getting a bit overcautious. Have a look at what I did in Public_transport_in_Auckland#Britomart_Transport_Centre, with the reference I provide "there" (currently its ref # 16). I basically make it look like a reference, and then provide the links to the articles where the references are located (sometimes this may be double linking, but as I said, I had some bad calls from other people). That should prevent over-eager placing of 'citation required' tags, or deletion. Ingolfson 13:02, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Split

Hi Hugo999—Thanks for working to improve the articles on trams. They look good. There is one thing I must point out, they are not new articles. Please read up on how to merge histories, I have spent a little time on it myself. It is not appropriate to copy and paste without the article history, so read up on the merging/moving guidelines. Thanks, Fred 08:37, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] B-32 Dominator

Hugo, I removed your addition about it being a fallback aircraft in the B-29 Superfortress article because you had no reference or citation for it. Yes, the article of the B-32 does say the same, but does not directly reference the statement. the USAF Factsheet does say it was a backup. You could formulate a correctly made statement for inclusion at the appropriate place near the top of the 29 article, and provide the correct ref.../ref clause to the sentence. Feel free to do this. Glad to assist you if you have any questions... and welcome to Wiki-land... a great place to learn many editing techniques and writing in an enclyclopedic fashion. Best regards, LanceBarber 02:24, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Will find a reference, though don't know if I can manage the referencing/linking! Hugo999 13:22, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Hugo, edit this section and disect this simple reference line
A sentence.[1] or a little more complex
Sentence 2.[2]
Further in the text sentence 'n'.[2]
Awkward sentence with the ref.[1]

And in all articles there is (or suppose to be) a Reference Section and underneath it there is either

  1. ^ Baugher's Encyclopedia: B-32 Dominator Access date: 27 April 2007.
  2. ^ a b Baugher, Joe. B-32 Dominator. B-32 Dominator Access date: 27 April 2007.

or

: these two forms will display the reference "footnote".

There are many variation of the ref-/ref format or protocol, for websites, for books, magazine, etc. Wiki-editors will use many variations... I try to use the format that is prevelant in the article, to give the copyedit consistancey. Often you will see the footnote with the bracket and http without the ref - /ref in the less-than greater-than carrots. This will have an awkward display. The awkward footnote will not display a line in the Reference section.

As for the material/comment you need to verify or site... go to B-32 article, go to the Factsheet external link to USAF page... see how it is stated .... copy the http link with a 'swipe' and Ctrl-C... then formulate your new sentence... goto the B-29 article and insert it in the second paragraph, in front of the 2nd to last sentenced... then insert the http link (Ctrl V)... and then insert the ref and /ref accordingly. Not good to add a phrase comment after the B-32 "Comparble aircraft" subsection.

Well, thats your ref/ref "101" class. Copyedit in wiki articles will take some time at first but you will find your "nack" after a few weeks. One gets a lot of practice flexing your deductive reasoning skills in learning the many techniques in wiki-land. Hope your having a good weekend. best regards, Lance.... [edit] GFDL

Be very careful when you keep splitting articles, They should be moved to retain their history. The is a requirement of the license agreement under which we edit, attribution must be given to all contributors. Your previous actions have made it look as you are the only contributor, this is a serious issue - one raised previously. Have you attended to this concern? Cygnis insignis 05:36, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

I presume you mean Trams in Australasia; most of it was about Australia not New Zealand so renaming may have originally been a possibility, but the new Trams in Australia has already been amended by other people, as has Trams in New Zealand. Hugo999 08:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Please ask an admin if the histories can be merged, I believe such a thing is possible. No biggie, but in future, it would be advisable to take note of the policy regarding cutting and pasting without attribution. Thanks, Cygnis insignis 09:24, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Comments on cryptographic and other SIGINT?

I've been braindumping into articles on SIGINT and MASINT, as well as National means of technical verification -- and a few pertinent biographies such as George Kistiakowsky and Dino Brugioni.

The first two articles are far too long, and I'd like advice on breaking them up -- even though I have more material for both, especially SIGINT. MASINT may be a better first target.

With SIGINT, I don't think it's as simple as splitting into COMINT and ELINT; there's lots of overlap. Any help would be appeciated. Howard C. Berkowitz 15:28, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Eddie Isbey

A tag has been placed on Eddie Isbey, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. [edit] Speedy deletion of Scott Brothers (locomotive manufacturers)

A tag has been placed on Scott Brothers (locomotive manufacturers) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] Locomotive Tender

Hi Hugo999, sorry for the delay in responding to your message - you left your message in the middle of my userpage, not on my talk page, so I have only just noticed it. My userpage gets a lot of vandalism, so it got lost in the edit history. In response to the specific issue you raised, you said:

Re the Locomotive tender article, I object to your deleting the link I put in on the basis that as it was US practice only so not really helpful. But how many website articles will cover practice throughout the world? I think a regional article can still be useful, and worth linking to.
The Wiki article itself has no definition of a Vanderbilt tender and I had put in this link as I had linked the article to my amendment of NZR G class (1928). Previously this article red-linked to "Vanderbuilt" (sic).

In general we prefer external links to be about the subject of the article. This means that an article about tenders should generally have links that are about all tenders, not just those in the US. However, I think you are right that we may need to make do with links that are more restrictive in this case. I was too hasty in removing that link. I have restored it with a link title that reflects the fact that it is about US practice. Thanks for letting me know about my mistake, Gwernol 13:23, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey nice work finding the first names of the State Service Commissioners. I have been struggling. Where did you find them? Matt (talk) 00:03, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Well in "Whos Who in NZ" (Turnbull Library has a full set) or in Alastair Taylor's "Honoured by the Queen" etc (also birth). Taylor has Robert Martin Williams not Robin Martin Williams so will check him further. And birthdates from Public Service lists in Archives NZ. Do you think Mark Prebble would like people to know his birthday - some have year/month, some have full date Hugo999 (talk) 22:39, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Kind of a funny question. Do you reckon people would send Mark Prebble cards? I think if it is public knowledge then it shouldn't hurt (though it is impossible to know what people's preferences are).
