According to the booklet with the Hyperion recording (Hyperion CDA 66901/2), the first performance took place in 1924, with regular performances thereafter. It does add that VW continued to revise the score and that the "definitive" version was given in 1956. I'm working on a cast list and plot summary based on the CDs.
