Talk:Hugh R. Brady
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes, Hugh Brady is unpopular and deservedly so. However the aricle repeats the old canard (beloved of the Irish Times Education Correspondent) that somehow he is unpopular for being "pro-business" - as if there were something wrong with this. Such a remark reveals a lot about the anti-business attitudes of those who say it.
The real problem with the Brady team is the way in which it has applied managerial techniques, which are fine for a business corporation, to an academic institution. This is quite different to being "pro-business". Furthermore, there has been a huge increase in the number of administrators, and a corresponding loss of control of academic matters by academics themselves (for example dictation as to how one examines one's students coming from those with no relevant qualifications). Part of the problem is that so many senior UCD people (i.e. the Vice Presidents) are Medics, and display all the arrogance and authoritarionism for which Irish Medics are renowned.
[edit] Pro-business
Actually, lots of people in UCD do have a problem with his pro-business stance, and rightly so. UCD is a university, not a corporation. Education should come first, not business oportunities. Funding from the private sector can have a detrimental on the quality and honesty of the research being done.
