Hugh Pool
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hugh Eustis Pool is a New York musician who plays guitar in a unique style that melds traditional Delta blues with country music and classic and psychedelic rock and roll. His instrument of choice is a National, a resonating instrument somewhat like a Dobro, played through a distortion pedal and he is a mean harmonica player. These days Hugh divides his time equally between the stage and the studio and has engineer countless albums by many notable New York bands.
Hugh was born in the Rust Belt on March 17th, 1964, and at 15 started playing guitar inspired by Neil Young, Deep Purple and the Allman Brothers. At the age of 20 he headed to New York to play his music in the subway system.
Over time he grew to be widely regarded as one of the finest living guitarists in New York City. Hugh Pool has shared the stage with such luminaries as Patti Smith, Government Mule, Professor Washboard, Levon Helm, Leslie West, Johnny Winter, Dave Edmunds, John Mayall, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and more. But it was until 1993 that he was finally captured on recording when the Spirits Treat Me Gently release came out on Red Tug Records.
He has performed on the Emeril Lagassi Show, The Mitch Albom Show and Late Night With Conan O'Brien in addition to a recent cameo on the CBS television program, Love Monkey. His original songs have been used for television, movies, award-winning documentaries and an off Broadway play.
Hugh Pool has made his living as a musician and can be found playing New York clubs regularly. A second recording, Live at the Rodeo Bar, attempts to capture this experience.
He is also a founding member of the blues group Mulebone with John Ragusa.
He also spends time engineering and producing bands and he has worked at Excello Recording as an engineer for 8 years. Here he has worked with talented folks like Debbie Harry, Kiki & Herb, Pagoda, Michael Brecker, Radio 4, Joseph Arthur, The Tirefires, Matt Smith, Larry Campbell, Tony Garnier in addition to a host of others.
