Hugh John Montgomery

Hugh John Montgomery (born: - died: ) was a politician from Alberta, Canada.

Montgomery first ran for federal politics in the 1891 Canadian federal election for the Liberal Party of Canada in the Saskatchewan (Provisional District). He was defeated by incumbent Day Hort MacDowall in a close race.

Montgomery would be elected to the Alberta Legislature for the first time in a by-election on November 17, 1914 after the death of incumbent Charles Olin. He would run for re-election and his first full term in office in the 1917 Alberta general election, this time he would be re-elected in a landslide over Conservative candidate R.M. Angus. Montgomery would be defeated by Evert Sparks from the United Farmers of Alberta.

Montgomery and Sparks would face each other again in the 1926 Alberta general election, Sparks would retain his seat beating Montgomery by less then 200 votes in a hotly contested election in vote transfers. Montgomery would run against Sparks again for the third time in the 1930 Alberta general election this time defeating him to earn his third term in office 9 years after he was defeated.

Montgomery would go down to defeat again in the 1935 Alberta general election this time by John A. Wingblade of the Alberta Social Credit Party finishing a distant second in a field of 5 candidates. Montgomery would attempt one last comeback at office this time running as an Independent in the 1944 Alberta general election. He would be defeated again by Wingblade running a very distant 3rd place.
