Hugh Charles Boyle

Hugh Charles Boyle (October 8, 1873 – 22 December 1950) was the 6th Roman Catholic Bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States.

Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he attended Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. As a 15-year-old seminarian, when he learned of the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, he walked the 35 miles to his home, only to discover that his father and seven of his siblings had been drowned. Only his mother and a baby brother survived. Her hair had been entangled on branch of a log, keeping her head above water. She was rescued 28 miles downstream from Johnstown.

Boyle was ordained a priest July 2, 1898. After several parish assignments, he became secretary to Pittsburgh Bishop J. F. Regis Canevin. In 1909 he became superintendent of the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools.

In June 16, 1921 Pope Benedict XV appointed him Bishop of Pittsburgh, after the resignation of Bishop Canevin, and on June 29, 1921 he was ordained as bishop.

He died in 1950 in Pittsburgh and is buried in St. Mary Cemetery in the city's Lawrenceville neighborhood.
