After attending Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia then the University of North Carolina (where he averaged 21.4 points per game in his senior year), he was selected with the 20th overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He remained with them for four years until he was traded to the Toronto Raptors prior to the 1996-97 season. He also spent time with the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets. His final NBA game was in 2004, with career averages of 8.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

The next season, he became a regular on their college basketball program College GameDay. Each year, he covers Championship Week and March Madness in-studio with Rece Davis, Digger Phelps, and Dick Vitale.
