Talk:Huang Biren
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hello... I have a concern with this article, and how it is repeatedly re-edited in a manner unsuited to an encyclopedia entry. Past examples of this have included repeated deletion of the actor's birthdate, inclusion of contact information for her management company, and glowing praise for her acting abilities. Here are some examples:
"With more than 40 dramas under her belt, supportive friends and fans and numerous achievements, her career will definitely soar to greater heights." [1]
"A reporter said that she is always dressed apporiately with her age, unlike Fann Wong, who is 35 years old but dresses like a 25 year old woman." [2]
Now, just to be clear, I should state that I really have no personal stake in this. I'm not from Singapore, I don't know Huang Biren, and I've never seen any of her work - nor am I ever likely to. This article was on the "Recent changes" list one evening while I was doing a counter-vandalism sweep. The page caught my eye because it had been edited by an IP address, rather than a logged-in user. A further look at the edit history reveals that a fair number of the edits (and repeated replacement of self-promotional material) come from IPs and not users.
I don't feel qualified to judge if Huang Biren deserves an article or not. However, having followed this article for a few weeks, I think that it - and a series of related articles under the categories Category:MediaCorp TV and Category:MediaCorp TV Artists - could use a good, solid re-edit and re-examination. Thanks for helping out - I've followed this for long enough and I'd like to take it off my watch list (rather than get into an endless series of re-edit and revert...) --Ckatz 05:28, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removal of the birth year
An anonymous editor is continually removing the birth year form the infobox, despite repeated requests and warnings about said action. I have recently received a note from one of the anon IPs saying:
"I was the one who set up this page, and Huang Biren actually does not want her age to be known as she has already said in public. So please take away the year that she was born in. Thank you." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.6.78.218 (talk • contribs)
Please be advised that this appears to be an ongoing campaign; it has occurred many times in the past few months, and looks as if it will continue, unfortunately. --Ckatzchatspy 08:11, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, so it goes for allowing intransigent anonymous edits on wiki. —Sengkang 08:45, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
For reference, the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons article has more information. In particular, please keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a press agency. --Alan Au 18:30, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Awards & nominations section
Please do not delete the sections as stated above. I really hope to add it back. Why do you all keep deleting it??
Please reply because I hope to add it back as soon as possible. My reasons for doing this is becuase, the page would be spoiled if you all keep deleting the awards section away. One small paragraph does not prove much. Not many people would see that small little paragraph about her awards.
A table to write about the awards she had received would be better.
Thanks. fatty 04:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- I can see why you want it back in, and I don't mind if you really want the table in. But honestly, adding in every nomination on a long table doesn't make the article look right. Basically, the limit on lists per article space should be about half at most (I don't know what/if the policy is), and Huang Biren was at about 80%, which gives the illusion of a long, well-written article, when in fact it's a bunch of lists. If you really want the tables in, make a subarticle titled Huang Biren awards or something. Still, I'm not a table fan where a table is not necessary, though I'm not sure if there's an actual rule on that.--Wizardman 04:33, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Keep in mind, too, that this is an encyclopedia - not a personal PR site for the actor. Additionally, please stop adding the "semiprotected" tag. By itself, it does not invoke protection - it only displays the banner. (This is the seventh time the tag has been improperly applied, at least three of those incidents originating with you, so you should be well aware of the error by now.) For the page to actually be protected, you will need the assistance of an administrator, and you will need to go through the proper procedure at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. However, it is unlikely that the request will be granted due to the low volume of edits on this page, and the nature of the edits (for example, continuous attempts to remove Biren's age.) Hope this helps. --Ckatzchatspy 04:41, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
So I'm gonna add the table back, OK?? 121.7.38.254 06:24, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I'll give in on keeping the awards table up, so bascially let's just keep the article as is as of my post.--Wizardman 06:29, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Huang Biren's endorsements
Hi all, I would just like to ask why there are so many users in Wikipedia deleting Huang Biren's endorsements and some other parts of the article. Examples are such as: Her endorsements include: Swarovski Jewellery, Mitsubishi household appliances, Legal Maid Agency, Bionn skincare centre and many companies. in the Career section of the article, and This nickname was given by many audience and industry players due to her excellent acting skills recognized in Singapore and abroad. in the Trivia section of the article, Point 3.
I would like to restore it back. Any feedback why these information has to be deleted? fatty 08:19, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- Please keep in mind that Wikipedia is not a personal PR site for Huang Biren, it is an encyclopedia project. Mentioning her paid endorsements is akin to giving those companies free advertising. As for the second part, saying she has a nickname (as the section currently does) may be reasonable. Saying she has a nickname "for her excellent acting skills" is non-encyclopedic and sounds promotional. --Ckatzchatspy 08:53, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- There's no reason why the information "has to be deleted," but there are a few reasons why those edits have been reverted. Most importantly, the information is not properly referenced. Aside from that, it was added by anonymous editors, whose edits have largely been promotional in nature. The information might be useful if it contributed to the person's notability, or if her endorsement was otherwise important to the notability of those companies. Finally, this article seems to be a frequent target for inappropriate content (such as copyrighted images, inappropriate "protected" tags, etc.) so edits here receive more scrutiny. --Alan Au 09:04, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, but I have seen many other pages in Wikipedia where some celebrity's website on wikipedia and they have their endorsements listed on the web. So why can't I just follow what other websites on wikipedia have? fatty 08:58, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- There may be a valid reason for including that information on the pages you looked at. Conversely, they may also be using improper information. Either way, you can't justify inclusion on the basis of what other pages do; instead, it has to meet Wikipedia's standards for the particular article in question. --Ckatzchatspy 09:04, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK, then I shall not add it in. fatty 14:50, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Personal information
fatty took exception to me removing the section titles above. Please note that the infobox has been expanded to include some of the personal information, but the rest just simply does not belong - things like star sign and who she admires most are completely unencyclopaedic and are a violation of WP:NOT#IINFO. Information like this is routinely deleted from biographies here on wikipedia. The trivia section has been removed per WP:TRIVIA. Again, some of the info, such as her height and name of her spouse are now already in the infobox' However, Wiki is not a gossip column, and in addition to being unencyclopaedic, having information about her house and the district she lives in may also cause her privacy to be violated. I appreciate some may feel strongly about removal of information, but I feel that this action is necessary in order to create an encyclopaedic article. Ohconfucius 06:51, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] This page will be protected!
Hi. Please DO NOT delete anymore information from the page. I would greatly appreciate that. I have added back the "Turn-downs in dramas" section and other important information such as what she is known for. Please do not delete anymore. THANKS fatty 07:28, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Removed. Come on, Darrentzw, we've already had several discussions about misuse of the protection tags, and about adding non-encyclopedic information to this article. Please stop before you incur a block. --Ckatzchatspy 07:49, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Mars vs Venus.jpg
Image:Mars vs Venus.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Sub headings in this page
I noticed that the sub headings of this page had been deleted. Please do not delete the subheadings because if there are no sub headings, the whole CAREER section of this page would thus be too long. The subheadings containing the years would make the whole page more presentable. Would greatly appreciate if the sub-headings are kept. Thanks. fatty (talk) 09:18, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Removed, again, because they are not appropriate subdivisions per Wikipedia convention. (By the way, don't worry - the section definitely isn't too long without subsections. It could, however, use a trim to get rid of a fair bit of non-encyclopaedic text.) --Ckatzchatspy 09:41, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
