Huazhong Agricultural University
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Huazhong Agricultural University (HAU) is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university giving priority to agriculture, characterized by life sciences and supplemented by the combination of agriculture, basic sciences, engineering, liberal arts, law, economic trade, and management. HAU, one of the first groups of universities in China which are authorized to confer Ph.D. and M.A. degrees, has produced the new China 's first doctor majoring in agronomy. Firmly adhering to the two central tasks like teaching and scientific research, HAU maintains its management by means of various levels and flexible forms. As far as the educational quality and academic level are concerned, HAU ranks first among the agricultural universities in China. In addition, it has been converted into a nationally important base for training senior special agricultural personnel and developing agricultural science and technology.

[edit] History
Huazhong Agricultural University (HAU) has a long history of over one hundred years. Its predecessor, Huazhong Agricultural College (HAC), termed Hubei Agricultural College in 1940, was derived from Hubei Farming School (HFS) established in 1898 by Mr. Zhang Zhidong, Governor-General of Hu-Guang region. In 1952 when China's high institutions were restructured HAC was founded, merging Agricultural College of Wuhan University with Hubei Agricultural College, the Agricultural College of Henan University, the Agricultural College of Nanchang University, the Agricultural College of Guangxi University, the Agricultural College of Zhongshan University and some departments of Hunan Agricultural College. HAC had its name changed to HAU in 1985.
[edit] Academicians
[edit] Zhang Qifa
Qifa Zhang was born in Hubei Province, China in 1953. He earned his B.S. in agronomy, in 1976 in Huazhong Agricultural College, China, and Ph.D. in genetics in 1985 in the University of California, Davis, USA. He is currently a professor of Huazhong Agricultural University, Dean of the College of Life Science and Technology, Director of the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and United States National Academy of Sciences.
He has focused his research and provided leadership in genomics and biotechnology of rice in China. Recently identified a gene Ghd7 which controls three important traits grain number, heading date and Plant height which is recently published in NATURE GENETICS. His research achievements include: (1) genetic analysis, identification, mapping and functional analysis of genes for agronomically important traits of rice including yield, grain quality, male sterility and hybrid fertility, plant architecture, phenology, nutrition efficiency, drought resistance, disease and insect resistances; (2) characterization of the genetic basis of heterosis in hybrid rice; (3) establishment of technological platforms for functional genomic studies including large T-DNA insertional mutant libraries, cDNA microarray, full-length cDNA for large scale gene discovery; (4) improvement of hybrid rice by enhancing grain quality and disease and insect resistances using molecular marker and transgenic technologies. He has published more than 120 highly appraised research papers from his work in journals such as Nature Genetics,Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, Nature Biotechnology, The Plant Journal, Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Molecular and General Genetics, Phytopathology, Crop Science etc., and delivered plenary speeches in a large number of international scientific conferences. He received numerous awards by the Chinese Government, international agencies and foundations.
He has served in a number of national and international advisory boards including the Oversight Committee of the McKnight Foundation’s International Program on Crop Science, the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Rockefeller Foundation’s International Program on Rice Biotechnology, and the Science Advisory Committee of the CGIAR’s Challenge Program. He served as the chairman of the Steering Committee of the Asian Rice Biotechnology Network. He also served in the editorial boards for a number of internationally reputable journals such as Science in China, Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Plant Breeding etc. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999, to the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2000, and to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2007.
[edit] Fu Tingdong
Expert in crop breeding; Professor of Huazhong Agricultural University; Superintendent of Research Institute of Crop Genetics and Breeding; Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (since 1995); Vice-director of Crop Society of China; Member of Standing Committee of Sciences and Technology of Ministry of Agriculture; Member of Council of Experts in Agriculture of China; Syndic of Society of Agronomy of China and Hubei Province; Syndic of GCIRC Professor Fu has been long engaged in teaching of crop breeding and research into rapeseed genetics and breeding. He was awarded the highest prize in the kingdom of rapeseed research, GCIRC Superior Scientist Medal, in 1991 as the second one receiving this prize after Professor Stefansson in 1987. His great contributions in the research of hybrid cultivars in rapeseed earned him the first award of “Scientific and technological Progress Prize”, “Yilida Science and Technology Award” and “HLHL PRIZE of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation”.
[edit] Xiong Yuanzhu
Expert in animal genetics and breeding and swine cultivation; Professor of Huazhong Agricultural University; Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Professor Xiong applied himself to scientific works on animal genetics and breeding, especially breeding of lean meat swine. This and his other scientific achievements have earned him the second award of scientific and technological progress prize by the National Education Commission, the second award of national spark program and the special award of scientific and technological progress of Hubei Province. His achievement on the research of swine with high lean meat percentage has been regarded as one of the 50 greatest scientific achievements to be popularized around the country.
