HR 4796A is a young star in the Centaurus constellation, approximately 220 light years from Earth. It is twice as massive as the Sun and twenty times more luminous. It is thought to be approximately 8 million years old and is surrounded by a protoplanetary disk that was discovered in 1991. The dust in the disk appears to be the result of collisions between planetesimals.[2]
In 2007 observations using the Near-Infrared Multi-Object Spectrometer aboard the Hubble Space Telescope indicated that the dust had a reddish spectrum similar to that of tholins.[3]
