From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Howe Island is a 31 km² (12 mi²) island located in the St. Lawrence River near Kingston in Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Thousand Islands chain. Together with Wolfe Island and Simcoe Island, Howe Island is part of the township of Frontenac Islands, created through municipal amalgamation in 1998.
Howe Island measures 13 km (8 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide. Located just east of Kingston, it forms the river's Bateau Channel on the north, with the main current of the river passing to the south.
The population of Howe Island currently numbers approximately 300 residents, although this figure doubles in the summer months when recreational properties are occupied. Two ferry services connect the island at Pitts Ferry and Gananoque.
