Howard Transit is the primary public transit system in Howard County, Maryland, which grew from the former ColumBus bus system in Columbia, Maryland. First Transit replaced Veolia Transport as the operating company in July 2007..

Howard Transit operates nine routes -- designated by color -- to various parts of the county and surrounding areas:
- Blue Route -- travels from Clarksville to the Mall in Columbia.
- Brown Route -- travels from the Mall in Columbia through the Columbia villages of Oakland Mills, Owen Brown, and Kings Contrivance.
- Green Route -- travels through the Columbia villages of Wilde Lake, Hickory Ridge, and Harper's Choice.
- Gold Route -- travels from the Mall in Columbia through the Columbia villages of Oakland Mills and Long Reach, and ends in Jessup.
- Orange Route -- travels from the Mall in Columbia through the Columbia villages of Hickory Ridge and Kings Contrivance.
- Red Route -- travels through the village of Long Reach in Columbia.
- Silver Route -- travels through the village of Owen Brown in Columbia and also goes to the Maryland Wholesale Food Center in Jessup, Dorsey MARC rail station, Arundel Mills Mall, and BWI Airport.
- Yellow Route -- travels from the Mall in Columbia to Ellicott City.
All routes except Purple have one or both ends at the Mall in Columbia. The Purple Route meets the Gold and Silver Routes at the Maryland Food Center. The Red, Silver, and Brown Routes all meet at Snowden Square.

Howard Transit riders can transfer to systems in several neighboring jurisdictions. Pricing for transfers vary among the various systems.
Howard Transit riders can transfer to and from:
- Connect-a-Ride, at the Mall in Columbia (Connect-a-Ride E to and from all Howard Transit routes except Purple), at Laurel Mall (Howard Transit Purple to and from most Connect-a-Ride routes), and at Arundel Mills (Silver to and from J and K).
- Metrobus, at Laurel Mall (Purple to and from 87, 88, and 89) and at BWI Airport (Silver to and from B30).
- MTA, at BWI Airport (Silver to and from Route 17 and the Baltimore Light Rail).
- MARC commuter trains, at the Dorsey stop on the Camden line and the BWI stop on the Penn Line (both connect to the Silver Route).
