Howard, South Dakota Tornado

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Howard, South Dakota Tornado was a large tornado that occurred on August 28, 1884. It demolished one farm, located south of Bridgewater, South Dakota. Four people were killed there and two injured. This tornado is notable in that it was one of the first tornadoes that is known to have been photographed.[1] The photographer is unknown, but it was taken southwest of Howard. It may have inspired L. Frank Baum to include a tornado in his book, The Wizard of Oz for he was a news reporter in nearby Aberdeen.
