How to Fight a Girl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How To Fight A Girl is a 1987 Thomas Rockwell novel. It is a sequel to his earlier book, How To Eat Fried Worms.

In the book, after winning the bet in the earlier novel, Billy bought his mini-bike and managed to trade it for a trail bike which is described in the novel as the trade of the century. His friend, Tom is on holiday. He meets a girl, Amy and asks her to a dance. They go on a date but when he meets her she hits him and leaves. His friends from earlier are still sore about losing the money in the first novel. To get revenge they start spreading false rumors about Billy and Amy to try to get them into trouble. This turns poorly for everyone involved, as the shame caused by the rumors eventually leads Amy to commit suicide, which deeply affects the other characters, especially those who started the rumors. In the end, the scorn they receive from the other members of their communities forces them to leave town. In the end, the surviving children learn a poignant lesson about honesty and the damaging effects that words can have. Rockwell published the third work in this trilogy, How to Kiss a Girl in 1992.
