Hi Hovea, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

[edit] Merging

I saw your request to merge the two articles The Hummingbirds and Hummingbirds (band), which I did. I also saw that it had been on that list for more than a month, and that you said you simply hadn't done it because you didn't know how. I did my first merges today, but it's actually quite simple.

In the first place, whenever you want to move an article that could be controversial (or, I suppose, when you simply don't want to do it yourself), add a merge-template such as {{merge}} to the articles by adding the code to the top of their pages.

However, like I just pointed out, if you don't do it, both articles can continue to sit there for months without anyone noticing. If you're willing to do it yourself, check out this help page on merging and moving pages. It boils down to the following (you can also see the exact steps I got this from:

  1. Cut/paste the entire content from the source page into the destination page (without changing anything in either) and remove the merge-template, on the destination page.
  2. Save the destination page, with an edit summary noting "merge content from [[article name]]" (This step is very important for licensing reasons, so please don't neglect it or someone else will have to fix everything up.)
  3. The source page should no have no content. Now write "#REDIRECT [[article name]] {{R from merge}}" on the page, again note the merger in the edit summary, and save the page.
  4. Now you can finally fix up the destination page so that there's no repitions and everything looks nice.
