A bit of a clean-up done just now; I've not introduced section headings, but I suggest they would be a good idea if further content is added. I've removed the references to fashionable beachwear (I really don't understand or agree with the idea that you can be more risque on Hove's beaches than on Brighton's!) and also the references to Liberalism and Conservatism which weren't backed up by any evidence from electoral returns. I've added a bit about the impressive housing developments, including the important change in dating of Adelaide Crescent which most certainly isn't Victorian! Kierant 00:50, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. Wondered if it would be worth mentioning the goldstone? [the lump of rock opposite DFS,not the footy ground he he] what do people think? I really dont know that much about it to comment.Ukbn2 12:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Also - kierant - maybe a mention of the sackville hotel collapse?Ukbn2 12:55, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

These sound like very good additions; I presume the Goldstone is something very old? Sadly most of the ancient history included so far for Brighton & Hove seems to be about Brighton-based things. But personally I know nothing about the stone - nor the hotel collapse - so I can't help with these. Will have a dig around in my reference book shelf though ;) – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 12:59, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps the engineerium deserves a mention as well? Recentley saved from closure buy a private buyer, i dont know nuch about the place though living not far from there once, its quite famous for its steam driven engines i think. You are right about the Brighton Influences. Yeah, the sackville hotel - think of the big green hotel opposite the lagoon on the seafront - its recentley imploded.

The goldstone is at the edge of hove park on the old shoreham road side. Must have some significance i am sure, i will read the plaque on the front of it this weekend.http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1001368Ukbn2 13:43, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Persistent opinions

There is a chunk of opinion about bikinis and a café which has just been added, anonymously, for at least the second time. I've removed it (again) because it really isn't verifiable fact and might even be an advert for the café. I've also returned the citation required tag which had been removed by an anonymous user (without a citation being added) for the comment about Hove's political shade/demographic, and added another such tag to the comment about where language students live. This too was re-added by an anonymous user today. I don't think it's in any way verifiable or even measurable. I'd like to delete it, but felt it was reasonable to request a citation first. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 17:42, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Twin towns

How come no twin towns are listed? Hove has at least one (Draveil, I think, but there must be more). Anyone have any idea how to get such a list? (I can't find anything on the B&H council site). A bit iffy 13:19, 2 December 2006 (UTC) I think Draveil is the only one. Not sure what happens to this and other twin town arrangements now the unit is the city of B&H. [edit] Removed from category "Orthodox Jewish communities in England"

I removed the article from Category:Orthodox Jewish communities in England because I don't believe the town has a sufficiently high percentage of Orthododx Jews for it to be defined as an Orthodox Jewish community. Quite possibly Hove has a higher proportion of Orthodox Jews compared with other towns (I've no idea, actually), but one can't go defining places as a "community of xxxxx" if only a small proportion of their residents come under that category. Otherwise you'd get articles categorised as "community of Conservative Party voters", "community of vegetarians" and so on.--A bit iffy 08:40, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Very hard to quantify, and I suspect figures aren't available. There are three synagogues in Hove (Progressive, Reform, Orthodox), which reflect a long-established Jewish community in Hove. I think we do need a mention of a significant Jewish population within Hove as this group are a significant part of the culture and heritage of Hove (though I don't think the community is specifically Orthodox). [edit] Tesco Hove

I know there is a lively lobby against Tesco nationwide. But this article should surely concern itself with Tesco Hove, not this wider argument. I know there was a campaign against giving Tesco the right to build a supermarket on the gasometer site, though if the article is going to mention this it also has to mention that there was a stronger case in favour of Tesco, at least stronger in the view of the planning committee on the council (and surely this has to count as the objective, verifiable view for Wikipedia purposes). Perhaps the easiest solution would be to delete the sentence setting out the objections (are they now relevant to anything?). Since Tesco has opened, Hove shops have gone from strength to strength. There is even a new supermarket (Somerfield Church Rd) a stone's throw from Tesco, while the Co-Op, Iceland, Cottinghams have all done fine despite competition from Tesco. George Street seems to have flourished (presumaby the impact of a free car park on the doorstep at Tesco). I know there are issues about big supermarkets taking trade from small shops, and presumably if people are shopping in Tesco they are not shopping somewhere else, but as far as Hove's shopping centre is concerned it is hard to see Tesco as anything other than a big boost for trade. Graemedavis (talk) 19:50, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Agreed - this isn't the place. I have a dim memory of removing the original (even more starkly worded) mention of Tesco, only to have it reinstated by the original author who was adamant it should be there. But much time has passed, and I think if nothing else, Hove has more significant development issues (on the seafront...) which should be the ones mentioned here, if any are, than a now-established supermarket. – Kieran T (talk) 02:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
