The common names of species should not be capitalized (except at the beginning of a sentence, or in a headline). Should be "jackdaw" not "Jackdaw" etc. Compare: "There is a cow standing in the field" -- not "There is a Cow standing in the field".

  • Ornithologists conventionally use capitals to distinguish between species and more generic descriptive names. Thus "There are several Common Terns nesting in the refuge." would mean that there are several members of the species Sterna hirundo nesting in the refuge, while "There are several common terns nesting in th e refuge" means that there are several terns in the refuge of a species (or several species) that are common in the area (not for certain the species that is called the Common Tern.). For the reason Wikipedia bird species names are given in the capitalised form). Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:46, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
