[edit] Early Origins

The distant origins of this family are speculative yet seem to originate in the Rhine Valley, east of modern-day France. Charibert, a nobleman in Neustria is earliest recorded ancestor of the family, dating before 636. Five generations pass between Charibert and the next descendant of note, Rutpert I (Robert I), who became a count in the Upper Rhine Valley and in Wormgau. The Capetian dynasty (kings of France, Spain etc.) and the Babenberger (or Popponen) are direct male lineal descendants of Robert I and are referred to as Robertians. Out of the Franconian Babenbergs (or Popponen) came the House of Babenberg around which whose castle Bamberg formed and a Babenberg family, which claimed to descend from the Franconian Babenbergs, later ruled what became the duchy of Austria. Also a portion of the family adopted the name Henneberg in reference to their fortress, Burg Henneberg.

[edit] The end of the family

Whereas the male line of the House of Babenberg became extinct in 1246, the Hennebergs lived on until 1583, then its lands were eventually divided among the two branches of the Wettin family.
