[edit] History

House-Hasson Hardware Company was founded in 1906 by C.S. Hasson and Sam House. House-Hasson started with 13 salesmen who came from the old C.M. McClung Company of Knoxville, Tennessee. The company has served dealers in Tennessee and 12 surrounding states and just recently the Caribbean. House-Hasson Hardware was generally known as "Knoxville's Exclusively Wholesale Hardware House."

In the beginning, orders were received and sent by rail. In those days the traveling salesmen who would call on dealers were grouped in two categories: He was either a "Bush Man" or a "Railroad Man". The "Railroad Man" was fortunate in that their territory lay within a reasonable distance of the many towns in which the railroad serviced. With the "Bush Man" it was a different story. He traveled along trails in search of remote settlements, each of which had a general store that dealt in all the necessities.

Today, orders are all electronically received from salesmen who use the Electronic Catalog on their portable hand held and laptop computers to access the 45,000 SKU's currently stocked in 3 warehouses. Customers are also able to place orders using an Electronic Toolbox Catalog or through the web-site. In 1980 the facility was moved to a major state-of-the-art distribution center in the Forks of the River Industrial Park. Since then, there have been four major expansions and the warehouse is currently over 350,000 square feet. The most recent addition completed at the end of 2002. In 2007 House Hasson Hardware purchased Persinger Supply Company.

New store sets and remodeling jobs are designed by using plan-o-grams and core assortments created on a computer system. The customer base consists of independent hardware stores and lumber yards in a 500-mile radius of Knoxville. Today it is affiliated with Distribution America, the largest independent hardware buying association in the United States. Stores that sell items it distributes are Trustworthy Hardware stores, Golden Rule Lumber Centers, Sentry Hardware stores and Priced Right Everyday stores. House-Hasson is licensed to offer retail programs in their areas.

Don Hasson, the company president, is past president of the Southern Wholesale Hardware Association and The International Hardware Distributor Association. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Distribution America, the Nations largest independent hardware buying association.
