Description |
This screenshot is of Conrad Veidt as The Stranger in the Hotel Belle Vue invited by Mrs. Sharpe to an engagement party describing the engagement as "a good match between the from all points of view" between Vivian Tomkin (who is not in love) and Mr. Wright (using the marriage to continue to supply a monetary to Major Tomkin, needing the money to survive in the hotel) in The Passing Of The Third Floor Back (1935), a story by Jerome K. Jerome. The characters at the table and the respective names actors/actresses in the following in brackets in the image above from left to right are: Stasia (the maid - Rene Ray), Mrs de Hooley (related to royality by marriage - Sara Allgood), the stranger (the protagonist - Conrad Veidt), Miss Kite (a model - Beatrix Lehmann), Major Tomkin (from the army - John Turnbull), Vivian (quite distressed at the proposition - Anna Lee), Mr Wright (representing big business gleeful in getting Vivian in exchange for a large sum of money to Major Tomkin - the main anatagonist played by Frank Celler), Mrs Tomkin (completed obscured - privately questions the marriage - Catherine Nesbitt), Mr Larkcom (face obscured - musician on the commercial side - Jack Livesey), Mrs Sharpe (the hotel's owner who selected such people representative from different classes and who torments Stasia - Mary Clare), Chris Penny (a rising architect despondent and angry of the engagement who has Vivian's heart and vica versa - Ronald Ward). The cook (Barbara Everest) is the only one not in the scene. Biting remarks and gossip makes the movie interesting, people are divided in classes and the aspect of sympathy extended by the stranger seems to free them for a while from such divisions. |
