Hotel Paper is a 2003 album and the third solo release by American singer Michelle Branch.
Some of the major themes on Hotel Paper are leaving things behind, constantly being on the move, independence, the mysteries of bus stations and spirituality.[2] The album's cover, photographed by Sheryl Nields, shows the face of a young woman (Branch) as she, it would seem, takes one last look at the person or place she is leaving behind.[original research?] The back cover presents her back towards the viewer, as she begins to walk away.
Hotel Paper debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 157,000 copies in its first week—it was Branch's highest sales week and surpassed the peak position of her previous major label album, The Spirit Room (2001).[3] By September 2003, Hotel Paper had sold 554,000 copies in the U.S.;[4] the RIAA certified it gold that month and platinum the following December.[5] The album spent thirty-three weeks on the Billboard 200.[6] According to Billboard in August 2007, it had sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S.[7] Hotel Paper was certified gold in Canada, selling 50,000 copies by October 2003.[8]
"Are You Happy Now?", the album's first single, peaked at number sixteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in December 2003, but lost to Pink's "Trouble". The second single was "Breathe", which reached number thirty-six on the Hot 100 and became a top five club hit. A third single, "Til I Get over You", was released with no music video and failed to chart.
