[edit] Portal:Military of Australia/Selected anniversaries/April

Hi Hey is just looking around noticed these so started the April red link, Just a thought currently the format is April 1 but wouldnt the day by day entries be more fluid if they were at April 1 that way the link back goes to the relevant month. Gnangarra 11:35, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Unless you know someone who can create a bot to do it otherwise we'll need to move them one at a time. I'll change april to that format, then go back and December. Will the move affect the portal page? Gnangarra 13:41, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
move the day pages before adjusting the month page Gnangarra 13:43, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
April is done Gnangarra 14:51, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Ok I'll start at September 1 work forward until yesterday. Gnangarra 00:51, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stirling

Hi Hossen, are you going to the Stirling open day tomorrow, it's only 20% possibility for me. If so are you taking a camera because if the opportunity arises could you get some pictures of the well on the north end of the Island where Stirling first setup camp when they arrived in WA in 1829. You can drive up to the well, plus a short 50m walk from carpark Gnangarra 15:29, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately I wont be able to get there either so we'll both have to wait until next time, I think its bi-annual Gnangarra 03:04, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I did end up getting there got photos to upload of HMAS ANZAC, HMAS Perth, HMAS Sirius, HMAS Sheean. I couldnt get to the well they werent letting traffic go there, looks like it'll have to wait until I take some school kids to the Island as every one of those trip have gone to the well. Gnangarra 13:24, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Yep 4 subs open 2 hour wait to get in, as I took my kids, decided against waiting, Also Perth, ANZAC and Sirius where open. Went on Perth but no photos allowed inside, plenty of displays. Airforce flyovers, AUSCDT Four did a display awesome to watch, got one picture I'm happy to upload as it isnt possible to id individuals, Lots of static displays but way to many people (20,000+ people would have been there) to get good pictures for use here.
Commonist is currently uploading 5 images to commons category Royal Australian Navy Gnangarra 09:29, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal

Hi I noticed that you put your portal up for featured and since my portal is two beneath yours on the candidate page Portal:United States Navy I wanted to share something with you. I seems that everyone want a suggest link for all the selected content so other can nominate an article. Since your using the random portal component that only way to add another link in the footer is to remove the footer completely and create you own footers for more whatever... and suggestions on each article. The reason I'm telling you this is that I made a few changes to the random portal component that will add a suggest link to the bottom of the section which you can the create. Any way if you would like to use it if adding suggestions becomes an issue. you can find the variation here Template:Random portal component with nominate. or you can simply add the words with nominate beside of Random portal component in each string in your portal. By the way the portal looks great. I especially love the daily unit section. anyway just thought I would drop you a line. --WilsBadKarma (Talk/Contribs) 17:11, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

RE: Thats fine I hope I didnt come across to strong. Just trying to be helpful. If you need any anything just let me know. Happy New Year--WilsBadKarma (Talk/Contribs) 02:07, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

RE:Review about the web resources as I said I dont believe they should be on the main page but if you really want to keep them you could set up tabs and put the section on another tab of the portal.--WilsBadKarma (Talk/Contribs) 04:11, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

    • Oh thats fine too. I just figured I would offer another option in case you were attached to it. --WilsBadKarma (Talk/Contribs) 04:22, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Untagged image

An image you uploaded, Image:817sqn crest.gif, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 11:41, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 10th Division (Australia)

Sorry - I've been leaving a link in the edit summaries, but copied the wrong text in this case - the link you're looking for is this one. The short version is that, after some discussion, theMILHIST project come to a consensus that units should be located at Unit Name (optional disambiguator). In this case, this would be 10th Division (Australia), rather than Australian 10th Division. Carom 03:35, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Yep. You caught me in the middle of moving them. Feel free to help out, if you have the time! Carom 03:43, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
In general, there is only one article, and it will have sections detailing each "creation" of the unit. The lead will specify something to the effect that "There have been several First Divisions in the history of the Australian military. The unit was first formed on such-and-such a date, and deactivated on such-and-such a date. The second formation occurred on such-and-such a date..." and so on. This format centralizes information as much as possible, and is preferable to disambiguations such as 10th Division (Australia) (World War II). Carom 03:58, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm. I think all of those should be merged, but the subject probably warrants some discussion. I'll bring it up on the main project talk page. Carom 04:30, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Your point is well taken - let's try and keep this discussion centralized. Drop on by the project talk page, where I've raised the question in the (sonewhat long) discussion on the new convention, and we'll try and figure something out. Carom 04:38, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Already dond. Hossen27 04:41, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requested articles list

Out of curiosity, was the size of Template:WPMILHIST Announcements/Australian military history causing problems somewhere? I wouldn't have thought that having a long list in the template would actually be an issue. Or do people just prefer a shorter list? ;-) Kirill Lokshin 13:43, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

No, it's fine; we'll just need to remember that there are more articles hidden there. Kirill Lokshin 04:57, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo for Military of Australia portal

Hi Hossen, I think that at least one of the featured photos should be of a female member of the Australian Military. While it's tempting to dig up a photo of WW2 nurses from the AWM's database, I think that a photo of a woman in a non-traditional role in the modern ADF might be more interesting. What do you think about: Image:050615-N-6811L-040-s.jpg ? (which is currently in use in the ADF article). --Nick Dowling 06:57, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: History of the Royal Australian Navy - possible female service section

Hi Hossen. I'd suggest a single section which traces the changing role and status of women in the Navy. This would make this interesting topic much more prominent than splitting it into different sections. --Nick Dowling 11:05, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I've added a photo to the article which you may want to use. It's not particularly suitable, but it is free of copyright. When Commander Michele Miller assumes command of Perth you or I should be able to find a photo and easily sustain a fair use claim on the grounds that this is a historic event for which free photos can't be sourced as it will take place on restricted Defence property. --Nick Dowling 10:30, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Battle of the Hook

Hi Hossen, I see that you recently edited this entry to insert references to the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment being present, while not stating either your sources, or their contributions to the battle. Other units had a presence of course, and some of these were small detachments from the Royal Tank Corps, Royal Engineers etc. And the artillery units on the left flank were of the USMC and Turkish Army. I suspect there may be some confusion creeping in, since this event is more properly referred to as the 3rd Battle of the Hook. Perhaps the title should change to reflect that. There had been two previous battles for possession of the Hook 1951-2, one when a USMC battalion defended the Hook, and of the other I have no information. I'd like to hear from you about your sources. I suspect that the Australian regiments you cited were involved in the earlier battles. The 3rd Battle of the Hook is extensively documented in the Public Record Office, London. As an aside, my cousin was also present with D Company 1DWR on the Hook itself during the battle, and helio-evaced as WIA. Regards. George.Hutchinson 16:47, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

See [1] 81.156.89.56 19:35, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply Hossen. See 2RAR "Samichon" Battle Honour for 24-26 July 1953 at [2]. It appears from this that the Australian Army named this fourth battle at the Hook as the Battle of the Samichon on the 2RAR Battle Honours. It seems to be deserving of an article in its own right. The existing article should really be re-named the Third Battle of the Hook, with additional articles to describe the First and Second. Alternatively, the three (or four) could be rolled up into a single expanded piece to more fairly include the USMC regiment that was badly mauled at the First Battle, and the jocks of the Black Watch who featured in the Second Battle. If it helps, I have access to the Black Watch Regimental War Diaries at the PRO, London. Let me know what you think of this. George.Hutchinson 02:11, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
So its to be four articles. Brilliant! Go for it! If you need any help don't hesitate to message me. On a related topic tho' .... There is a comprehensive list of all 1DWR and attached troops who were KIA, MIA and WIA during their two deployments on the Hook. List was compiled from copies of signals sent from 1DWR to Commonweath Brigade HQ and relatives, and were found in the 1DWR War Diaries. 1DWR Regimental Museum has a hard copy, and I have the only other hard copy. List was used for analysis of injuries and shows that approx 70% of casualties were from mortar fire. Never been published (except in the War Diaries at the Public Record Office) because it identifies men by name, rank, army number, date, injury, and evac method. A nearby US Army MASH and its attached helio evac unit handled most of the injured. Some of the injured men will still be alive. So if used, it needs to be used with sensitivity. If its of use message me. George.Hutchinson 16:37, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
I've made a start along the lines we agreed with an edit of the 3rd Battle of the Hook. I've managed to retain a reference to the fourth battle and the two Aussie regiments, and their Battle Honour of The Samichon. Now its over to you ... George.Hutchinson 00:44, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
