Coordinates: 12°43′N 77°49′E / 12.72, 77.82 Hosur (Tamil: ஓசூர்) is a Town and a municipality in Krishnagiri district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a taluk of Krishnagiri district. It is located about 40 kilometres south-east of Bangalore. According to the 2001 census, its population is 84,310. Hosur is known for its manufacturing industries and its Mediterranean climate.

Hosur was founded by King Rama Natha during the year 1290. He belonged to Hoysala Dynasty. The rule of Hoysala Dynasty came to an end after Pallavaraya III died during the war with Maaravarman Sundarapandyan of Pandian Dynasty. During British period, Salem District collector Walton Illiat Lockardt, made Hosur the head quarters for Salem district.

Before industrialization began in this part of the state of Tamil Nadu, Hosur was a village surrounded by forests. During 1980s industrialization began with the help of SIPCOT and Hosur gradually developed into a busy industrial town.[1].

Hosur is located at 12.72° N 77.82° E[2]. It has an average elevation of 879 metres (2883 feet).

According to 2001 India census{{constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Hosur has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 70%. In Hosur, 16% of the population is under 12 years of age. This town has a uniqueness of having 30% population consisting of Bachelors (Singles) that is one reason for higher male ratio.

Telugu the official language of Hosur and is spoken by majority of people. Telugu and Kannada are also other languages spoken in Hosur, due to its close proximity to the Andhrapradesh and Karnataka borders.

Hosur houses a lot of industries right from abrasives, automobiles, bakery to welding and wire mesh industries. Carborundum Universal Limited,TVS Motor Company,Ashok Leyland and Caterpillar power India Pvt Ltd Inc are few famous companies to name, which have their manufacturing units in Hosur. Another significant establishment is Titan Industries, which happens to be India's largest and world's sixth largest watch manufacturer. There are more than 750 industries classified as Large - 85, Small and Tiny - 512 and remaining are either unregistered or sole proprietorships type industries. The Bangalore-Hosur highway has been witnessing a lot of development over the last few years.

The first Governor General of Independent India, Rajaji was born on December 8, 1878 in Thorapalli Village near Hosur (about 6 km from Hosur) in Salem District (now Krishnagiri District) of Tamil Nadu.

Hosur is famous for its hill temple whose presiding deity is Arul/Migu Sree Maragadhambal Sameetha Sree Chandrachoodeshwara Swamy Temple (a name for Lord Shiva). The panoramic view from this hill is enchanting.

Hosur also has a Hanuman Temple , on the way to TVS where the statue is the tallest in whole of Krishnagiri District

Around 80 kilometres from Hosur is the Hogenakal Falls across the river Cauvery. Travelling to Hogenekal from Bangalore via Chandapura, Anekal, Thally, Denkanikottai, Anchetty, Natrampalyam, is a pleasure, as this route is covered by reserved forest areas. Wild animals, particularly elephants, can be spotted. Bettamugilaalam is the highest peak of this area. Anchetty forest located near hosur is a heaven for scenic beauty lovers.

Thally, a village 25 km from Hosur is known as Little England for its Mediterranean climate.

A rich variety of fruits and vegetables are cultivated in Hosur. These consist of tomatoes, cabbages, onions etc. A large amount of roses are exported from here. Hosur accounts for 5% of Mangos of the total in Tamil Nadu, which makes Krishnagiri district as the no 1 district for Mango cultivation in India. The rich content of the minerals "Alluvial Soil" is good for the growth of many rich cash crops.

Hosur exports most of the Roses from India. Madhagondapalli near Hosur is the home to TANFLORA largest exporter to various European countries during Valentine's day. Taj Mahal, a variety of rose that borrows its name from the monument of love and for which India has won a patent, is grown in a hamlet in Tamil Nadu and sold in the global market for Valentine’s Day.
