[edit] Music Department

The Hopkins Music Department continues to be one of the strongest in the state of California. The concert and jazz bands have received continuous high ratings at festivals since 1985. The bands have received first place awards at the Music in the Parks festival in Anaheim, California six of the last seven years (they did not participate in 2003). The new string orchestra program has also received high ratings, with both the Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras receiving Superior ratings at the California Music Educators Association Orchestra Festival in May 2007. The Advanced Orchestra received a rating of 99 out of 100 at this festival, the highest of any junior high or high school group performing.

[edit] Spiritdays and Music

Hopkins has recently started playing music on Fridays in which students are allowed to choose songs to play during lunch. Every other Friday, Hopkins also has a Spirit Day which features lunch time competitions or other events.

[edit] Field Trips

[edit] New York City

Every year the Drama Department hosts a five-day field trip to New York City. Any eighth grader is allowed on the trip, but students in Drama, Drama II, Art, or any other performing arts classes are the first to be chosen to go on the trip. Since 2007 the New York trips have been around $200 cheaper than the trip to Washington D.C. The trip normally starts by taking a Red-eye flight out of San Francisco International Airport around 7-8 PM. They then continue to a showing of the Today Show. The students stay in a hotel, bunking with two to three other roommates of the same gender. Students are able to recommend their own roommates and usually get their first or second choices. The students receive a tour of New York City visiting famous landmarks and building such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and the Rockefeller Center(On top of the Rock). Near the end of the trip a group picture is taken at Times Square. In 2008 the trip ended with an extensive tour of the backstage of the Apollo Theater and then performed on the stage of Apollo. It was not in front of a large audience, but students told jokes, sang several songs, performed skits, and danced. Finally the trip is ended by taking an airplane from Newark Liberty International Airport and arrive in San Francisco at 10:00 PM.

[edit] Washington DC

The five-day Washington DC trip is held annually on a first-come, first-serve basis for eighth graders during February. The students are taken to D.C to visit their congressmen, representatives, and notable landmarks such as the Vietnam Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Institution among many others. If the situation is favorable, a trip to the White House is sometimes also arranged. At the end of the trip, a group photo is taken outside the Capitol Building. Considerably cheaper than the New York trips, the students stay in suites, bunking with two to three other roommates of the same gender, at a bed and breakfast. Students are able to recommend their own roommates and usually get their first choices.
