Hopetoun Monument
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Situated on Byres Hill near Haddington, the Hopetoun Monument was built in 1824 in memory of Sir John Hope, the 4th Earl of Hopetoun (1765-1823). There is an inscription on the monument which states:
This monument was erected to the memory of the Great and Good John Fourth Earl of Hopetoun by his affectionate and grateful tenantry in East Lothian. MDCCCXXIV
The monument is often referred to as Garelton Monument, after the Garelton Farm settlement on Byres Hill.
There are 132 steps of a dark and narrow spiral staircase to climb the 100 foot (30.48 meters) high tower, to reach the viewing platform which offers spectacular views of the Firth of Forth and the surrounding countryside.
