TV.com summary

Hope & Faith is an American sitcom that aired for three seasons on ABC from September 26, 2003 to May 2, 2006. For its first two seasons the show was part of a revived TGIF comedy block.

The show starred Faith Ford as Hope Shanowski and Kelly Ripa as Faith. Ford plays a homemaker with a husband (played by Ted McGinley) and three children. Ripa plays her sister, a soap opera star whose character is killed off, leading her to move in with her sister's family. The show is based in part on the life of its creator, Joanna Johnson, a former cast member of The Bold and the Beautiful. The show featured guest stars such as Tony Curtis, Dean Cain, Robert Wagner, Regis Philbin (Ripa's co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly), Kathie Lee Gifford, Jenny McCarthy and Mark Consuelos (Ripa's husband).

The show was primarily filmed at New York City's Silvercup East, a sister studio to Silvercup Studios, to accommodate Ripa's schedule with Live with Regis and Kelly.

[edit] History

In early November 2003 the show helped ABC tie for the lead in Friday night viewership, attracting an audience of around twelve million.[citation needed] By February 2004, ABC ordered four more episodes for the show's first season, for a total of 26 episodes; as of then, Hope & Faith was being watched by around nine million viewers each week.[citation needed] It continued at that level for March, though by mid-April, when the show was renewed for a second season, it was down to 6.8 million viewers and a 57th-place showing in the ratings.[citation needed]

The show's Nielsen Ratings during the 2005-2006 season continued to weaken slightly. In its time slot Hope & Faith often placed third, behind Three Wishes and Threshold; when Threshold was swapped with Close to Home, the show continued to place third.[citation needed] The four episodes broadcast during November sweeps averaged 6.52 million viewers, with weekly rankings ranging from 63rd to 77th.[citation needed] Its rankings placed it at or near the bottom for all 2005 primetime shows airing on the Big Three broadcasting networks.[citation needed]

ABC announced on January 18, 2006 that it was benching Hope & Faith for the February sweeps to make room for an expanded edition of Dancing with the Stars. The show began to air its remaining episodes from March 21, 2006 on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET against American Idol. [1] In May 2006, ABC announced that that the show would be cancelled when it unveiled its Fall 2006 lineup. [2]

[edit] Syndication

All 73 episodes were picked up by the U.S. television network WE: Women's Entertainment, as the total number of produced episodes was short of what was required for American television syndication.

[edit] Opening sequences

The shows intro and theme song changed each season.

In its first season the theme song was slower. Its lyrics were:
You know we don't have to talk about it.
We've got our different ways.
But you know in the end we can laugh about it.
Even though we can drive each other crazy,
You know we don't have to worry.
We will live, we will laugh, and we'll love each other anyway.
La la la la la la.

The scenes in the season one theme song are like this; It starts on a black & white photo of Faith, who's probably age 1 holding on to a baby walker, and Hope, who's probably age 5. They are standing on a dirt path, with grass in the back round. Then it shows a color photo of Hope, who's probably age 7, and Faith, who's probably age 3, standing in a feild. Then it shows a photo of Faith, who's probably age 12, and Hope, who's probably age 16, with a blank backround, and it credits Kelly Ripa and Faith Ford. Then it shows a photo of Faith, who's probably age 12 holding cheerleading pom-poms, and another picture of Faith who's at her current age, and she's holding her emmy. The Hollywood sign is in the backround. Then it shows a photo of Hope who's around age 18, wearing her graduation cap and gown, and another photo of Hope and Charley who are making different poses, and Ted McGinley is credited. The Shanowski's house is in the backround. Then it shows a photo of (from left to right) Sydney, Hope, Charley, Haley, and Justin who are all sitting on the living room couch making different poses. Then it shows Faith appear in the picture. As these happen, Nicole Paggi, Macey Cruthird and Paulie Litt are each credited separately. Then it shows a current photo of Faith and Hope making different poses, as the show's title Hope & Faith is shown. Then it shows a photo of Hope, who's probably age 6 riding a tricycle, and Faith, who's probably age 3 sitting in a chair connected to the tricycle. As this is shown Created By Joanna Johnson is shown.

Season two's theme song is faster. Its lyrics go:
We drive each other crazy it's true (crazy)
but I can't imagine my life without you.
Sisters, with a brand new star,
Sisters, we've come so far,
Sisters, there's no better way to be,
you and me.

The scenes for the season 2 theme song are from season one episodes, and a few from season two. It is like this: It starts off with a scene from "The Diner Show" where Faith and Hope walk out of the kitchen wearing waitress uniforms. It then shows a scene from "Hope Gets a Job" where Faith and Hope's dresses are caught in the printing machiene and are ripped off. Then it shows a scene from "Daytime Emmys" where Faith and Hope are singing. During these 3 scenes, Kelly Ripa and Faith Ford are credited. Then on a split screen it shows a scene from "Hope Gets a Job" where Faith is playing with a paddle ball, and a scene from "Madam President" where Hope is dancing. Next it shows a scene from "Hope and Faith Get Randy" where Charley's holding his arms up, and quickly lowers them. Then it shows a scene from "Anger Management" where Charley has gunk all over his face. Then it shows a scene from "Car Commercial" where Charley's standing at the door holding flowers. During these three scenes Ted McGinley is credited. Next it shows a scene from "Summary Judgment" where Faith is dressed like a hot dog and grabs on to Hope. Then it shows a scene from "Escape from Albuquerque" where Sydney's walking downstairs. Then it shows a scene from "Escape from Albuquerque" where Sydney sticks out her tongue revealing a pierceing. During these two scenes, Megan Fox is credited. Then it shows a scene from "Remembrance of Rings Past" where Haley is hugging Charley. Then it shows a scene from "Silent Night, Opening Night" where Haley's wearing her fountain costume. During these 2 scenes, Macey Cruthird is credited. Next it shows a scene from "Prom and Circumstance" where Faith and Hope are in their prom dresses. Next it shows a scene of Justin where he's holding a martini glass talking. Then it shows a scene of Justin wearing his Frank Sinatra suit singing. During these two scenes Paulie Litt is credited. Next it shows a scene of the entire family sitting on the couch, with justin sitting on Faiths lap and Sydney tickling Haley. Then it shows a scene from "Mismatch" where Faith accidentally knocks Hope over. During these two scenes the show's title Hope & Faith is shown. Next it shows a scene from "Remembrance of Rings Past" where Hope and Faith are dancing, as Created By Joanna Johnson is shown.

During the show's third and final season its theme song is truncated meaning its cast is credited during the opening scene, and not during the theme song. The theme song last approximately 5 seconds and has no lyrics, only a tune. The ending of the song is different in some episodes (for example sometimes it plays a bell, or has drum beats). The theme song has a plain black backround, and the name "Hope" drops from the top of the screen, and "& Faith" flies to the top of the screen, and they come together and show the show title.
