From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hong Kong Poison Information Centre (HKPIC) is a professional body established by the Hospital Authority, the Department of Health, and Chinese University of Hong Kong (Drug and Poison information Bureau) in the year 2005. The HKPIC collects data from voluntary reporting of all actual or potential poisoning cases from the accident and emergency department of 6 major hospitals in Hong Kong. The 6 hospitals are: Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), Price of Wales Hospital (PWH), Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH), Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH), and United Christian Hospital (UCH). The HKPIC complies the information reported by these regional hospitals into a local poisoning database. These data are used to figure out the poisoning pattern in Hong Kong, identify poisoning hazards early by epidemiology approach, and guide the focus of poisoning prevention, clinical research and professional training.
The HKPIC also answers toxicology consultations from healthcare professionals in Hong Kong. Poisoning management advice and toxic substances information are provided upon telephone, fax or email consultation. Currently all consultations are handled by emergency medicine specialists with training and clinical experience in toxicology.
