[edit] History
Hong Kong Football Club was formed in 1886. It is the first football club in Hong Kong and the oldest existing football club in Asia. The club was created following a meeting that was held at the Victoria Recreation Gymnasium on 12 February 1886.[1]
The first sport the club played was rugby union, on 16 February 1886, four days after the club formed. The first soccer match of the club was played on 16 March 1886, with Royal Engineers.[1]
In 2006, they celebrated their 120th year as a club.
[edit] Soccer
While the soccer team dominate the second-tier competition, they rarely enjoy success when playing against the professional sides in the First Division.
In the past few years, HKFC opted not to promote to the First Division. In 2006, finally, the club accepts the promotion after winning the Second Division.
HKFC recorded upset victories against title contenders South China and Happy Valley in November 2006, with the former resulted in the sacking of Portuguese coach Jorge Amaral of South China. At that point, HKFC were hopeful of avoiding relegation.
However, HKFC's form slumped since then. After losing 4 league matches in a row between March and April 2007, they were to be relegated to the Second Division.
