[edit] Summary
I got this screen shot from the Sony 2007 GDC Keynote Address video. It shows when you download PlayStation Home, there is a "Home" icon between the "Game" and "Network" icons on the XMB.{Note: This screenshot is outdated now as a PlayStation Network is a new category between Network and Friends.}

This is a screenshot of a non-free copyrighted video or computer game, and the copyright for it is most likely held by the company or person that developed the game. It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law, as such display does not significantly impede the right of the copyright holder to sell the copyrighted material, is not being used to generate profit in this context, and presents ideas that cannot be exhibited otherwise. See Wikipedia:Non-free content. To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use, as described on Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline, as well as the source of the work and copyright information. Note: This tag should not be used for screenshots of free software; use the license tag corresponding to the software's license instead, optionally alongside {{Free screenshot}}. |
[edit] History
Home has had a very short history, so far. The online "closed BETA" began in early May of 2007, with only a handful of select users invited to participate. According to e-mails from Sony about the closed Beta, invites had been sent out every week for new users to participate in the closed Beta.
When Home was first introduced at GDC 2007 (Game Developers Conference) the first impression of Home was just astonishment. The Home shown then, featured a modern type of design, all with an indoor atmosphere. These spaces included: Home Lounge, Game Room, Home Theater, and your Home Space. You could either walk to any of these, or use your "virtual PSP" to relocate to the location you desire.
At the famous E3 event, Sony's conference was an outstanding one. Home was brought up many times, and was even used to kick off the conference. While talking about Home, Sony introduced the "New Home." This included a new Home Square. The new Home Square was on open air atmosphere. It includes waterfalls, streams, trees, plants, and wildlife. Also, new interactions in the Home Square include chess and checkers that you can play with other users. Other than the new Home Square, the Game Room and Home Theaters have stayed the same, except for the outside. They are included in the Home Square and appear as a Bowling Alley (Game Room) and an actual theater (Home Theater). Also, now users have the option to download the rooms. Say, you didn't want to use the Home Theater that takes up a mere 23MB on your harddrive, you can have the option not to download it, however, if you do this, you can not access it. New features also include the ability to call other users in Home from your virtual PSP.

Everything can be customized to your liking with items you collect or purchase.
Not only is Home your home online with PlayStation 3, Home is also a vast network of communication for PlayStation users. Browse the Hall of Fame for trophies players have collected in various videogames, or just hang out in a virtual outdoor lobby to talk with text and voice. Other features in Home include a theater where the Home world also users can watch videos from one users' collection together, a series of mini-games that players can play, and much more as Home evolves.

They have been working on it now since 2005! SONY is just trying to get every little bug out of it. All of this will be in 1080p HD.
[edit] When Will We Get Home?
Supposedly, The Home "open BETA" is scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2008, with the final coming in the second quarter of 2008. Many rumors are circulating about Home's launch date, and none have been confirmed true.
However there is a high possibility of it coming out April 15th 2008 with the next coming update! This rumour can now be dismissed - as the date has passed. Keep an eye out on May 6th 2008 when Sony Hold a press confrence in London, Rumoured to announce the release date of Home. This rumour can also be dismissed - as this date has also passed
